University of Virginia Associate Professor of Philosophy in Charlottesville, Virginia

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenured Associate Professor to serve as director of the Politics, Philosophy, and Law (PPL) undergraduate program. Applicants working in any area of philosophy that might inform PPL are encouraged to apply.

PPL is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major that provides students with an opportunity to pursue intensive study of the connections between political philosophy and legal theory, legal thought and historical change, law and public policy. It is by admission only and attracts a cohort of highly talented and motivated students. The successful candidate will have significant control over the intellectual direction of the program, in consultation with the program's affiliated faculty and advisory board.

In addition to performing the normal research duties, the successful candidate will administer the program for an initial contract period of three years, with the possibility of renewal. Because of this administrative duty, teaching load for this position is reduced to 2/1 in the period that those administrative responsibilities are undertaken. On completion of the administrative assignment, the teaching load will revert to the standard 2/2, with all teaching in the Philosophy Department.

We encourage applications from members of groups under-represented in higher education, as well as from philosophical traditions that have been under-represented in contemporary Anglophone philosophy.

For full consideration, submit your application by November 6, 2023. The position will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. For questions about the nature of the position, please contact Elizabeth Barnes (e.j.barnes@virginia.edu).

A PhD in Philosophy and three years of experience are required.

Apply online at http://apply.interfolio.com/132213, and submit the following:

  1. Cover letter describing your (1) research agenda, (2) teaching experience, (3) interest in and qualifications for directing a program such as PPL, and (4) your contributions to the Department and University.

  2. Current curriculum vitae.

  3. Writing sample of 20-30 pages

  4. Three letters of recommendation

Applications that do not contain all the required documents will not receive full consideration. For questions about the application process, please contact Melanie Sponaugle, Academic Recruiter, at unw5dq@virginia.edu.
