University of Virginia Assistant/Associate Research Professor of Emergency Medicine in Charlottesville, Virginia

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia invites applications for tenure ineligible faculty research position for the Division of Medical Toxicology.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is led by Andrew E. Muck, MD, MBA, and includes adult care, pediatric care, and active air and ground transport programs. There is an established emergency medicine residency program and fellowships in Medical Toxicology, EMS, Cardiovascular Emergencies, Ultrasound, Research, Administration, Global Health, and Education. The UVA Health System is a 700-bed tertiary care and Level 1 trauma center with an annual ED census of 75,000 located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia, a city that has been rated as one of the best places to live in the United States.

The department is seeking candidates who are focused on research, grants writing, and public health improvement. This research faculty expert will conduct statistical analysis, design surveillance systems, create public health improvement programs, and perform education to the public, multi-tier student groups, fellows, attendings, and other interested or vested parties. This position will be actively engaged in the fields of epidemiology and medical toxicology. Candidates should have expressed interest, based on education and experiences, in working collaboratively with primary investigators and being developed into a primary investigator in the near future. Areas of interest should include research focusing on overdose trends, specific treatment in the poisoned patient, emerging substance use/misuse, health questionnaires, community impact reviews, and other scientific or analytical research in the medical and toxicology fields.

This position will be expected to be a resource and a leader for grant writing, research methodology, writing for publication, and professional communication. Additionally, this position will be required to speak with both individual persons and in large groups presentations, therefore, being comfortable and professional in these settings will be required.

The position is open to individuals with a Ph.D. or other terminal doctorate-level degree that is eligible for appointment to the University of Virginia faculty. Candidates with education in public health, epidemiology, or similar areas are encouraged to apply.

Successful applicants will need to demonstrate recent applicable research in areas directly engaging medical toxicology and public health. This research should include such areas as engagement with the various national poison center and toxicological databases, such as the National Poison Data System, NACHA, ToxIC, CDC’s Wonder Database. The research experience may be epidemiological, clinical or translational in nature.

Candidates with past success in NIH or similar awards, other significant external funding awards, and extensive record of research or publications are encouraged to apply.
