Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Test back-flow preventers campus-wide. Possession of a current and approved Backflow Assembly Certification Tester is required or the ability to obtain it within the first year of hire.

  • Maintain reclaimed water system.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on fire hydrants to ensure proper operation.

  • Perform flushing of water distribution by operating blow-off valves and fire hydrants.

  • Perform and maintain water valve exercising with related equipment to ensure proper operation.

  • Apply standards of the Safe Drinking Water and Clean Water Act.

  • Apply knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and safety regulations related to water quality and backflow prevention.

  • Apply principles of Cross Connection Control (Backflow Prevention)

  • Apply operational and maintenance practices of the American Water Works Association.

  • Performs construction inspection of utilities served by the University.

  • Additionally, work includes locating and marking the University utility assets, coordinating NC811 tickets, and reviewing as-built drawings along with sanitary sewer video.

Minimum Experience / Education:

Required Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

University Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from a technical college with an Associate degree in electromechanical technology or instrumentation technology and a minimum of two years experience related to the area of assignment experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.

Preferred Education Skills and Experience:

  • Three years of related experience in water distribution, wastewater (including sanitary), and other utility systems, including the practices of water quality, fire hydrant operation, backflow prevention assembly testing along repairs, and operating in-ground water valves along with equipment associated with performing tasks preferred.

  • Knowledge of the techniques for taking water samples, testing methods, and performing related tests.

  • Knowledge of utility construction techniques, processes, and materials.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications and to compare them with various aspects of construction in progress

  • Experience operating in-ground water valves and equipment associated with performing tasks.

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to gather data for the use of generating reports.

  • Water Quality/Water Treatment knowledge.

  • State, Journey, Technician, or variation of Plumbing License preferred.
