Position Summary:

In your role as a Part-Time Construction Lab Technician, you will be responsible for providing assistance with various construction materials testing in the laboratory and collection of relevant test data on future or existing projects. With projects ranging from complex roadway construction to single-family residential communities, you will gain the knowledge and experience necessary to take your skills to the next level.

We seek hardworking and motivated candidates with work experience in construction, civil engineering, lab testing or related areas. We will provide on-the-job training.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine laboratory tests on soil including compaction testing (proctors), gradations, and Atterberg limit testing

  • Test concrete cylinders, grout prisms, and mortar specimens for strength parameters

  • Document accurate and detailed lab activity and report the findings to other technicians and supervisors

  • Communicate verbally and electronically with various lab/field personnel and colleagues

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Required: High School diploma or equivalent

  • Required: Strong written and verbal communication and ability to use technology/computer

  • Preferred: AAS or BS in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology or relevant field of study

  • Preferred but not required: prior experience as field/engineering technician, construction materials testing or related experience

  • Preferred but not required: Active ACI, ICC and/or NCDOT/SCDOT certifications and/or willingness to obtain industry certifications

  • Required: Monday-Friday daytime availability

  • Will work with school schedules but must be able work various hours between 8am-5pm

  • Ability to calculate results from construction materials test data

  • Ability to accurately complete lab-testing paperwork

  • Ability to follow direction from others and complete tasks as assigned

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, detailed reports, short correspondence and memos

  • Ability to lift 50-100 lbs.

  • Ability to work well with others

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly exposed to warehouse conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments.

  • Lab work on construction materials involving long-term standing and perhaps repetitive motions.

  • Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus), smell, hear and touch (use your hands to reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit).

  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move/shake up to 50lbs. (soil and/or concrete tests and related apparatus); frequently lift and/or move up to 60lbs. (soil and sand samples) and occasionally move more than 100lbs. (such as a loaded wheelbarrow of concrete samples).

This is a part-time position but can also be considered an internship, depending on the candidate.
