Job Description

The Environmental and Social Risk Oversight Manager will be responsible for developing and executing environmental and social risk management responsibilities in alignment with the organization’s reputation risk management framework, including risk oversight of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)-related business activities. The role will oversee enterprise environmental and social due diligence processes and manage oversight of policy, processes, and other activities to mitigate reputation, greenwashing and social washing risks enterprise wide. The Manager will report to the Environmental and Social Risk Management Director.

The complex role requires a unique ability to assess and oversee environmental and social risks stemming from the Company’s external-facing activities, including those activities with customers and vendors, in addition to assessing potential reputation risk from statements or positions the company may make associated with achieving environmental and social goals. A successful candidate will have the ability to objectively assess and document reputation risk considering a multitude of factors such as external events and trends, industry-specific factors, and factors specific to customers/third parties and Company products/services.

Key responsibilities include executing on the following:

• Oversee enterprise environmental and social due diligence processes and manage oversight of policy, processes, and other activities to mitigate reputation, greenwashing and social washing risks enterprise wide.

• Provide feedback and recommendations to enterprise stakeholders, including through the opening of formal issues, on the adequacy of Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) completion, including risk identification and completeness.

• Drive review and approval of ESDD changes to ensure business lines are consistently identifying and escalating material risks through the company’s Environmental and Social Risk Policy (ESRP) process.

• Assess and challenge identified environmental or social risks associated with customers; provide feedback and recommendations to business lines on adequacy of risk mitigation and determination of ESRP applicability.

• Proactively identify customer risk and partner with the business line to assess whether clients remain within the Company’s stated reputation risk appetite.

• Review and credibly challenge external-facing reporting and company-sourced publications to ensure potential greenwashing and social washing risks are identified and mitigated.

• Support company disclosure activities pertaining to environmental and social risk management, including voluntary disclosures and regulatory requirements/requests.

• Monitor environmental and social news and trends to inform key stakeholders and evaluate the impact to the Bank’s processes/policies and customer risk assessments.

• Identify and escalate emerging risks to senior business and risk leadership with recommendation(s) to reduce reputation risk to the Bank.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience

  • Typically more than 10 years of applicable experience

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Strong knowledge of industry environmental and social risks and strategy

  • Relevant experience identifying and resolving reputational concerns, including greenwashing / social washing risks

  • Considerable understanding of U.S. Bank processes, business models, risk management programs and organizational structure

  • Demonstrated ability to credibly challenge data/information and provide feedback to senior level managers

  • Ability to build and maintain working relationships with business line leaders and other partners

  • Thorough Risk/Compliance/Audit competencies

  • History of credible challenging of processes/policy execution, including assignment of risk issues where gaps are identified

  • Data analysis experience with ability to identify anomalies or outliers

  • Risk approval experience for transactions (Credit/EFCC/Reputation)

  • Large bank experience

  • Proven adaptability to changing priorities

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and project management skills

  • Verbal/written expertise for executive/audit/regulatory

  • Effective presentation, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

The role offers a hybrid/flexible schedule, which means there's an in-office expectation of 3 or more days per week and the flexibility to work outside the office location for the other days.

The salary range reflects figures based on the primary location, which is listed first. The actual range for the role may differ based on the location of the role. In addition to salary, U.S. Bank offers a comprehensive benefits package, including incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase 401(k) contribution and pension (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). Pay Range: $129,455.00 - $152,300.00 - $167,530.00
