Job Purpose

The Collections and Outreach Coordinator manages the collections of the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History (the Museum) and the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences (the Department) and leads the outreach and promotion of our programs to the public. Responsibilities include organizing and cataloging new and preexisting specimens and samples, coordinating specimen loans to and visits from external researchers, fossil preparation, assisting the Chair and/or their designee in materials for course instruction, training and supervising temporary employees and volunteer fossil preparators, assisting in the molding/casting and digitization of specimens, and overseeing operation of the 3D printer.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma and 2 years of relevant experience is required. A college degree and prior museum experience is highly preferred.

Additional preference will be given to candidates with a bachelors or higher degree in museum studies pertaining to earth and environmental sciences and/or natural history, or in any science program directly relevant to the geosciences and/or paleontology. Public outreach, supervisory, accounting, and office management experience preferred. Fossil preparation and grant writing experience are also highly desirable. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Requires exceptional organizational, time management, communication and public engagement skills. Basic knowledge of biological taxonomy and vertebrate anatomy is essential. Basic specimen preparation skills essential, especially of fossils, minerals and rocks. Must have the ability to use MS Office software suite. Ability to supervise and direct student employees (museum docents) is essential. Knowledge of website maintenance and social media marketing is important. Must be willing to learn web authoring and help in maintaining a website. Must also be willing to learn 3D modeling software and digitization techniques. Required ability to earn and maintain adherence to the universitys Minor Policy protocols. Must work well with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, and members of the public of all ages. Ability to routinely and safely lift 35 lbs.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

This position is the first point of contact for members of the public and students, faculty, and staff who wish to engage with the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History at the College of Charleston. Must be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and to work effectively with others. Some evening and weekend events with associated travel required (approximately 3-4 days per quarter).
