Job Title: Diesel Technician

Department: Truck Shop

FLSA: Non- Exempt

General Function:

Diagnoses problems and perform tractor-trailer repairs/part replacement as needed.

Reporting Relations:

Accountable and Reports to: Truck Shop Manager/Director of Transportation

Positions that Report to you: None

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Diagnoses problems and performs tractor-trailer repairs/part replacement including but not limited to diesel engines, brakes, rear-ends, clutches, air conditioners, radiators, diesel engine injectors, water pumps, and wheel bearings.

  • Conducts inspections on equipment to meet federal guidelines.

  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical systems using computers and scanners.

  • Maintains accurate record of work performed and parts used.

  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time.

  • Performs minor repairs to building and service equipment including replacing starters and alternators.

  • Responds to service calls on the road to repair breakdowns.

  • Performs service work including oil changes.

  • Peforms tire work.

  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics:

  • Must have the ability to perform a wide range of intellectual and practical problems: non-verbal symbolism, comprehend most abstruse concepts.

  • Must be able to do Arithmetic, Algebraic, and Geometric calculations.

Education and Experience:

High school with additional trade school or equivalent experience necessary. Courses of technical certification in automotive maintenance helpful. Valid CDL license required. Over six months up to one-year similar or related work experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically able to perform very heavy work: exerting up to 100 lbs of force occasionally, 50 lbs of force frequently, and 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects.

  • Visual requirements include clarity of vision at distance of 20 inches or less to 20 feet or more, with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.

  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: Climbing, balancing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion.

Working Conditions:

The duties of this position are performed in a repair shop setting. There is exposure to dirt, noise, temperature, extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, dangerous chemical or solvents, and electrical shock. Occasional travel and overtime is required. There is occasional pressure to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects.

Equipment Used to Perform Job:

Standard tools and equipment used for truck maintenance and repair including welders, electrical analyzers. Performs data entry of job orders and parts used on computerized inventory system. Must have own hand tools.

Financial Responsibility:

Failure to perform job duties correctly could cause damages in excess of $100,000.00
