Description of Job

This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) is a Laundry Supervisor at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex, a Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison facility. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; training and overseeing inmate work crew in laundry operations and ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant completion of assigned tasks. This position promotes the CDOC Mission and Vision with integrity and commitment.

Safety and Security- position maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear and accurate communication trains and guides inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches and monitoring workplace environment and inmate behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to facility policy and limits inmate access to restricted areas; position performs inmate counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy and writes and submits required reporting. Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment.

Supervision– Position maintains safety and security by providing supervisory duties for assigned inmate crew; promotes a high level of performance and security by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values. Trains and instructs inmates in laundry operations in compliance with agency policy and regulation to include the proper use of all laundry equipment, sanitation standards and cleaning supplies; ensures adherence to established housekeeping and sanitation procedures in order to prevent injury and infection and stresses proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule, assigns tasks and inspects work; performs inmate evaluations and reduces inmate idleness, creating real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry.

Operations– Position maintains safe, secure and compliant laundry operations and equipment maintenance; prepares daily weight records, calculates daily consumption of supplies, maintains all laundry product inventory; maintains clothing movement records and documents all issues, losses, and exchanges to provide accountability for all clothing & linen.

Follows guidelines for the identification, accountability, laundering & wearing of authorized state-issued clothing in compliance with policy and regulations. Tasks include, but are not limited to: providing properly-fitted & properly-tagged set of state-issued inmate clothing & laundry bag to all inmates undergoing initial admission process; maintains record of clothing issued, repairs damaged clothing & determines the serviceability of clothing & the necessity for exchange.

Position oversees and schedules regular housekeeping assignments for the work unit and monitors the safe use and storage of cleaning supplies, chemicals and tools.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

Four (4) years of employment experience in a commercial, institutional or industrial setting (such as hospital, hotel, senior care living facility or correctional facility) operatingcommercial grade washers and dryers;laundry experience may be combined with commercial, institutional or industrial housekeeping or janitorial experience in order to meet the four year minimum.

OR:

Applicant may meet the four year requirement with a combination of work experience as follows:

A minimum of two (2) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with correctional experience. (If you are using correctional experience, be sure to include details in the 'Work Experience' section of the application)

Correctional Experience- must be security related duties where primary responsibilities included detaining, controlling movement and escorting inmates in a prison facility; conducting counts and searches while monitoring inmate assignments and movement throughout the day.

Substitution -Formal education that resulted in demonstrated competencies equivalent to the competencies learned through the required experience (such as a degree in hotel or hospitality) may be substituted for the relevant experience. You must attach a copy of your transcripts for education to be considered.

Required Competencies:

  • Strong work ethic, integrity and dependability;

  • Sound judgment and decision making skills;

  • Proficiency in the operations of commercial/industrial washer and dryers.

  • Ability to effectively maintain established inventory, monitor and track supplies and clothing and control chemicals;

  • Ability to monitor equipment use and ensure manufacturer recommended maintenance and prompt repairs;

  • Clear understanding of the safe use of cleaning supplies, chemicals and sanitation processes;

  • Willingness and ability to effectively communicate while working with inmates individually and in groups, providing verbal and/or written instructions, monitoring work progress, quality and compliance, in a highly regulated environment with firm deadlines and mandatory reporting and record-keeping regulations;

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively cooperate with other staff and inmates and inspire teamwork;

  • Willingness and ability to train, coach and mentor inmate workers in order to prepare them for community reentry;

  • Ability to effectively respond to emergency situations (such as fights, fires, medical emergencies and escapes);

  • Ability to in close proximity to industrial equipment.

  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language;

  • Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supervising staff;

  • Experience in stain removal processes, textile repairs and alterations and ironing processes;

  • Experience maintaining inventory and responsibility for unit procurement;

  • Registered Laundry and Linen Director (RLLD) or Certified Laundry/Linen Manager (CLLM).

  • Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension , relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;

  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;

  • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

  • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;

  • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;

  • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

  • Swing a baton in a striking technique;

  • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;

  • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;

  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;

  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security;

  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;

  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;

  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;

  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;

  • Willing and able to travel;

  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;

  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;

  • Employees may be required to submit to regular serial testing and reporting for COVID-19.

    Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant’s background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.

    The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. A drug test will be administered to all new employees; employees must successfully pass. Random drug screening will occur throughout employment.
