Job Description

 

The Senior School Certifying Official (SSCO) plays a critical role certifying and maintaining compliance for our military-connected students utilizing Veteran Affairs (VA) education benefits. The SSCO engages with students, campus partners, the VA and other entities to ensure the center delivers a holistic approach that enables our students to achieve their academic goals.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

• Oversees all school certifications and serves as the primary University VA School Certifying Official (SCO)

• Supervise and mentor other SCO's to ensure compliance with VA, DoD, and SUU policies and procedures

• Responsible to collect, organize, and submit the school's annual VA catalog approval process

• Responsible for inputting and maintaining all student records in other education databases; AI Portal, Navy/Marine, Tungsten

• Work with and maintain an active working relationship with campus partners to maintain compliance for university, Veteran Affairs, and Department of Defense requirements

• Maintain student files in and send periodic student communications with relevant information

• Assist the Director with efforts of recruiting and retention services and referrals for both on-campus and off-campus resources

• Assist the Director with creation and implementation through new diverse platforms to deliver services for military-connected students on campus

• Supervise VA work study students, to include processing time cards to VA

• Assist the director with policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all state and federal laws

• Collaborate with other university veteran center staff, applicable state and federal agencies on programs and issues that support military-connected students

• Occasional travel for training and conferences

• Other duties as assigned

 

Education and Experience Requirements

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

High School Diploma/GED

 

Demonstrated ability to work independently

 

The ability to connect with students in a positive and meaningful way

 

Experience working with Veteran Affairs Education benefits

 

Demonstrated ability to process applications, follow through with supporting documents and making decisions for students using various education benefits

 

Demonstrated ability to research, execute, and maintain compliance of laws, policies, and guidelines

 

Exceptional computer skills, with experience in record management, administration and data entry

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Bachelor's Degree

 

Honorably discharged Veteran, currently serving National Guard or Reserve Component member, or a dependent

 

Three or more years' experience working with students in a higher education environment

 

Leadership experience to effectively & efficientl y manage the center in the absence of the director, while delivering quality programs and support to students

 

Excellent interpersonal skills, with previous presentation or teaching experience

 

Strong oral and written communication skills

 

Experience working in the university Banner and Degree Works database systems

 

Ability compute, analyze, and validate tuition and fee costs

 

Analysis data and trends to make meaningful changes in policies or procedures to str amline work effort to positively impact student success
