Job Summary
Coordinates total nursing care for the surgical patient and the patient receiving outpatient therapy. Works in cooperation with ancillary health care departments in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice and in providing quality care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Provides patient education, including pre and post-op teaching, self care needs, medication teaching, pain management, etc.
• Obtains vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.
• Performs thorough and efficient preparation activities for patients scheduled for surgical procedures.
• Excels in effective time management. Carries out assignments with minimum supervision and guidance.
• Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to ensure complete pre-admission care and preparation for the day of surgery.
• Coordinates, communicates, and exchanges information with Admissions, Surgery, Same Day Surgery, Anesthesia, and other inter-related departments within SARH.
• Provides and coordinates services, exchange information and coordinate externally with physicians, office personnel, and other health care providers.
• Maintains friendly and courteous interpersonal communication skills and a positive service attitude.
• Develops/maintains quality patient education and pre-op teaching materials.
• Evaluates quality of preadmission review program through quality improvement activities.
• Starts IV's and discontinues IV's.
• Administers medications as needed.
• Maintains accurate and timely charting and documentation.
• Performs physical and psychological assessments.
• Makes appropriate referrals to other departments as needed.
• Communicates effectively with physicians and CRNAs. Carries out and notes physician and CRNA orders.
• Utilizes professional judgment and nursing skills, including critical thinking skills.
• Interacts appropriately with other staff members.
• Develops plan of care.
• Prepares surgical charts for the next day.
• Assists patients with turning and ambulation.
• Checks charts for appropriate lab work and values, ensures that pre-op work is done as ordered.
• Makes post-op call backs.
• Assists with data collection for quality management.
• Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.
• Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.
• Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.
• Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and JCAHO standards.
• Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.
• Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
Graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing. At least one-year experience in a related nursing field.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before customers, patients, families and employees of the organization.
Position requirments, certificates, Licenses, registrations:
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
Licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Iowa.
Current BCLS certification required before starting employment.
ACLS certification within six months of employment.
PALS certification within 1 year of employment for all full-time and part time staff, PALS not required for relief RNs.
Minimum of two years Med/Surg experience preferred.
