MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university with a major course of study in forestry and three (3) years of forestry experience;or

A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in forestry and two (2) years of forestry experience;or

Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Requires possession of a valid driver license.

The incumbent of this position will work 4 10-hour days.

JOB DUTIES:

The Forestry Supervisor II is responsible for the construction and maintenance of all roads and bridges on state forests within the Tallahassee Forestry Center in accordance with Florida Forest Service State Forest Road and Bridge Standards. Provides improved access for public use and resource management. This involves the management of over 900 miles of primary, secondary, and tertiary roads within the Center’s state forest system. Activities will include maintaining and upgrading existing roads, new road construction, and maintenance of bridges. Ensures proper hydrological function on state forests associated with road construction including the installation and maintenance of culverts, low-water crossings, and erosion control features. Responsible and accountable for managing budget/dollars/resources (staff, vehicles, computers, cell phones, etc.) of any assigned programs in an efficient and accountable manner. Responsible for ensuring that assigned program areas have operational procedures and processes which result in accountability and compliance with division and department policies and procedures.

Plans and directs road and bridge activities by scheduling personnel and ensuring the availability of necessary equipment. Provides training and supervision to park rangers and other personnel who carry out road and bridge operations. Ensures that all road crew personnel have the necessary licenses to operate all assigned equipment safely and legally. Prioritizes and schedules road and bridge activities so that they can be accomplished within the necessary time frame. Reviews policies, procedures, and guidelines that apply to road and bridge management before implementing projects and evaluates impacts or identifies problems following completion of projects.

Maintains records of planned and completed activities and assists with updating of the GIS database for the Center’s state forest road system. Ensures cost accounting during all operations so that project budgets are never exceeded without prior permission from the District/Center Manager. Prepares budget requests, bid package specifications, equipment logs, time sheets, and miscellaneous reports upon request. Consults with immediate supervisor and other district personnel about projects, problems, and policies.

Plans and ensures that all equipment is maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedules and that no unsafe or unmaintained equipment is used during road crew operations.

Manages a road and bridge materials inventory, as well as an inventory of signs, posts, guardrails, and other safety devices as required by law. Ensures that these signs are installed and maintained where needed, and that unsafe bridges and sections of road are closed in a manner that prevents unauthorized access.

Plans and supervises local bridge inspections, coordinates with the FL Department of Transportation (FDOT) on bridge inspections held within the forests and maintains bridge inspection files on all bridges. Consults with road and bridge design engineers on available technologies.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
