Position Summary

The Tax Analyst – State and Local plays a critical role in ensuring Subaru of America, Inc. and its subsidiaries comply with state and local corporate income tax obligations. This position supports the tax management team by handling tax audits, resolving discrepancies with tax authorities, and coordinating tax-related activities across the organization. The Tax Analyst also collaborates with internal departments and external tax providers to gather necessary documentation, prepare tax returns, and manage tax payments. This role demands a strong understanding of state and local tax regulations, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment.

Major Responsibilities

  • Reviews and responds to notices and other correspondence received from taxing authorities. Determines response that is required and works with manager if needed to ensure that state and local tax matters are properly addressed.

  • Discusses and corresponds with tax authorities to resolve discrepancies and obtain guidance. Understands which Subaru personnel are needed for consultation, what relevant information is needed, and which approach is best for a favorable resolution.

  • Researches and gathers documentation and other support necessary to resolves issues. Effectively examines, communicates, and interprets state and local regulations.

  • Provides support for tax audits. Plans and executes audit support activities and serves as communication point of contact with auditors in order to properly relay and understand information requirements.

  • Supports the preparation of state and local corporate income and franchise tax returns, extensions, and quarterly estimated tax payments. Works closely with Accounting to gather required information and uses knowledge of tax compliance as well as past filings to determine accuracy and reasonableness of information provided.

  • Consults and coordinates with external tax providers. Serves as liaison and point of contact between tax providers and Subaru Accounting and Tax personnel.

  • Coordinates tax payments with Accounts Payable group. Determines payment method, when applicable.

  • Maintains quarterly/annual IFRIC 23 uncertain tax positions calculations. Uses subject matter knowledge of multiple state/local statutes in order to determine what further action (if any) is needed and to defend tax positions.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Interacts with all levels of staff and management in the Tax and Accounting/Finance areas, up to and including Vice President – Chief Financial Officer, to provide explanations and information on state/local tax returns and statutes.

  • Keeps up to date with latest tax legislation changes. Advises manager on how these changes could impact Subaru operations and practices.

  • Completes administrative tasks such as ordering supplies, preparing envelopes and certified mail slips, making copies, requesting checks, reserving conference rooms, preparing PowerPoint slides/presentations, organizing file room, and sending and recalling files to/from offsite storage.

Required Skills & Personal Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting and/or Finance.

  • Relevant experience in tax compliance.

  • Working knowledge of US GAAP and IFRS, as well as federal, state, and local corporate income and franchise taxes.

  • Well-organized.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to set priorities, handle multiple tasks, and deliver results in a dynamic work environment.

  • Commitment to achieving a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Creative problem-solving skills.

  • Proficient in MS Excel and MS Word.

  • Willingness and ability to learn new tools and technologies quickly.

  • Self-driven with a desire to learn and grow professionally.

  • Ability to focus on solving the problem and developing solutions that work for the long term.

  • Experience with tax research tools such as CCH AnswerConnect. Ability to effectively perform relevant tax research and communicate/document result of that research.

Education/Experience Requirements: BA/BS with 4 to 6 years of relevant experience.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid Role: Remote work 2 days per week (After 90 Days Onboarding)

  • Travel Required: Less than 5%

Compensation: The recruiting base salary range for this full-time position is $67,900 – 90,000 / year. Within the range, individual pay is determined by factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
