For more information, visit amwater.com and join American Water on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. _ Primary Role_ * Lead and conduct operational audits and projects to assess AW’s risks and controls to ensure: * Compliance with laws and regulations, * The effectiveness and efficiency of operations, and * The safeguarding of company assets. * This role will work closely with AW teams such as the Corporate Operational Excellence, Safety, Environmental, Engineering, and State teams to identify potential risks. * Sharing technical knowledge on operational matters such as environmental management systems, water quality, treatment, engineering, safety, and regulatory compliance. _ Important Information_ * Internal audit gives you an opportunity to learn the business and to make connections with senior leaders throughout American Water (AW). * We provide objective assurance and advisory services using a risk-based, collaborative approach to improve risk management, controls, and to support AW’s strategic objectives. * American Water Internal Audit (AW IA) is a separate, independent function that reports directly to the Audit, Finance and Risk Committee of the Board of Directors. * American Water Internal Audit’s leadership team are experienced professionals with diverse backgrounds who care about your career and development. * We are looking for team members who are passionate about problem-solving, committed to ethical business practices, and eager to engage in continuous learning. * We will support you in building skills for success in internal audit and/or other areas of AW. * AW IA offers a good work-life balance. _ Development Opportunities_ • Communication skills and exposure to all areas (Operations, Compliance, IT, Finance) and levels (front-line employees, executive leadership team, Board) at AW • Risk, compliance, and controls awareness • Leadership, stakeholder management, collaboration and influencing • Problem solving, organization, and project management • Analytical - use data to drive actionable insights _ Key Accountabilities_ • Assess risks and controls following internal audit industry standards and AW IA procedures. • Lead operational risk-based audits/projects and audit teams ensuring quality and timely audit deliverables. This includes coordination, planning, fieldwork, audit/project reports, and issue resolution. • Collaborate with and influence stakeholders through effective communication of audit/project observations and recommendations to reduce risk and enhance controls. • Independently propose recommendations that support AW strategies and objectives. • Build rapport across diverse teams including AW stakeholders and external vendors throughout audits/projects, manage competing interests as needed. Train / develop junior team members to ensure team productivity. • Assist in the development of a pipeline for talent in area(s) of expertise. • Ensure communication and performance of responsibilities is organized, efficient, proactive, timely, cost effective and professional. • Serve as an internal or external representative for AW and/or Internal Audit in areas of expertise. _ Knowledge/Skills_ • Possess in-depth expertise in these operational areas: water and wastewater treatment, water quality, environmental management systems/ procedures, environmental regulations, health and safety regulations, engineering, and operational matters. • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on initiative, knowledge sharing, and decision making. • Strong project management and planning skills, including the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in teams or independently. • Knowledge of industry policies, procedures, regulations and laws. • Skill in collecting and analyzing complex data, evaluating information and systems and drawing logical conclusions. • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). • Proficiency with systems such as SAP and PowerPlan is a plus. _ Experience/Education_ • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required. Engineering, chemistry, biology, environmental science areas of study preferred. • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience with operating water/wastewater treatment and environmental management systems or equivalent preferred. _ Travel Requirements_ • Up to 5% travel within the United States, usually scheduled with advance notice. _ Certifications & Licenses_ • Water and/or Wastewater Operator License, and/or engineering qualification preferred. _ Work Environment_ • Remote work schedule.
