The Immunology and Cardiovascular (ICV) Thematic Research Center (TRC) at BMS is one of the fundamental Research and Early Development (R&ED) units delivering therapeutics to patients. Our mission is to create transformative medicines of tomorrow based on the cutting-edge science of today. We leverage BMS's internal innovation engine that includes industry-leading expertise in small molecule chemistry, protein biotherapeutics, cell therapy, protein degradation, nucleic acids, and other therapeutic modalities. We work closely with our R&ED colleagues in clinical and non-clinical development, project leadership, translational medicine, and informatics to advance therapies based on a deep understanding of causal human biology. Furthermore, we collaborate across the biopharmaceutical ecosystem to establish partnerships that complement our internal expertise.

Position Summary

Bristol-Myers Squibb's newest R&ED site located in Cambridge is in the heart of a vibrant ecosystem of world-class science, innovation, and business opportunities. We are seeking a skilled and motivated scientist with experience in various aspects of immunology, viral immunity, molecular biology, and drug discovery. This person will focus on drug discovery within the area of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, which includes (but not necessarily limited to) target identification, target validation, elucidating drug mechanism of action, molecular basis of disease states, and the assessment/development of novel modalities for use in drug discovery.

The desired candidate will be well-versed in various biochemical, cellular, and immunological techniques in the laboratory, but also have an insatiable curiosity to lead them towards continually expanding their scientific repertoire. This individual will demonstrate sophisticated scientific thinking and have the capacity/eagerness to rise to challenges. A strong work ethic, good judgement, and the ability to work equally well in a team or independently are key qualities in the successful candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and execute in vitro/ex vivo experiments based on literature discoveries, in vitro experimental data, in vivo animal modeling, immunological evolution, genetics, clinical data, and technological advances.

  • Collaborate alongside a cross-functional team that includes immunologists, chemists, computational chemists, biochemists, in vivo biologists and proteomics experts to discover new targets, derive new biological mechanistic insights, and support programs as they move through clinical development.

  • Execute primary cell-based (mouse, monkey and human), whole blood, and cell line-based experiments such as ELISAs, genetic manipulations, western blots, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, immunoprecipitation, qPCR, RNA-seq, etc. to drive early discovery efforts.

  • Design sophisticated cross-disciplinary experiments within project teams to enable the progression of therapeutic candidates through the drug pipeline.

  • Innovate

  • Excellent communication, record keeping, presentation, collaboration and organizational skills are required.

  • Travel will be less than 5% of the time.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • 4+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Master's Degree

  • 2+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience in inflammatory & autoimmune diseases, molecular immunology, immunometabolism, infectious diseases, neuroimmunology and/or cancer immunotherapy is required.

  • Extensive hands-on experience in tissue culture handling of primary immune cells from human/animal tissues is required.

  • Experience with viral infection of cell-lines and primary cells is required.

  • A clear track record of scientific accomplishment and a natural self-starter.

  • A sophisticated understanding of experimental design and the ability to identify scientific problems as well as potential solutions.

  • Evidence of sustained independent thought as well as creativity in developing unique scientific ideas/technologies.

  • An ability to analyze large multi-dimensional (e.g. multi-OMICs) datasets is desired, but not required.
