The preferred location for this position is Spring House, PA. Consideration will also be given for individuals to be located in San Diego, CA and Cambridge/Boston, MA.

We are seeking creative, self-motivated leader to join our In Silico Discovery Protein Therapeutics team. We are expanding our AI/ML capabilities across antibody design and multifunctional molecule optimization and are seeking a visionary leader to drive this initiative. The candidate will be a highly collaborative leader interested in impacting biologics design and development using computational techniques. This is an exciting opportunity to join an enthusiastic, diverse, and global community of in silico scientists committed to bringing innovative new medicines to patients.

The Director will lead a core group of scientists and data scientists and will be responsible for setting and executing the strategy for internal and external innovation in evolving areas of antibody design and multifunctional molecule optimization. This will include working with other teams within In Silico Discovery and Biologics Discovery to lead in the establishment and execution of strategic initiatives in computational design and AI/ML within this biologics space. Significant time will be spent engaged in collaborations, change management, external engagement, and keeping in the forefront of this evolving area. This role will report to the Senior Director of In Silico Discovery, Protein Therapeutics.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Key contributor in developing a comprehensive strategy to stay in the forefront of innovation in computational design and AI/ML for Protein Therapeutics.

  • Develop and implement the computational biologics design and optimization strategy.

  • Partner closely with Biologics Discovery teams to build custom predictive and AI/ML tools for biologics design and optimization.

  • Mentor junior scientists, fostering their development as expert informatics scientists.

  • Engage in industry consortia and represent Janssen and In Silico Discovery in key initiatives.

  • Periodically be tasked with evaluating and making recommendations for the acquisition or building of new technologies. This may include performing Due Diligence on potential partnering/M&A opportunities.

  • Contribute to an inspiring, scientifically rigorous, and innovative culture that embraces continuous learning, development, and collaboration.

  • Contribute towards efforts to influence J & J's external environment via external scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and via participation in external conferences as needed.

Qualifications

  • A PhD and a minimum of 8 years of experience in drug development with industry or related leadership experience within industry or academia is required.

  • Demonstrated expertise in the field of AI/ML, computation, and antibody design & optimization in drug discovery is required.

  • Deep understanding of pharmaceutical discovery and optimization processes is required.

  • Hands-on experience with large scale data curation, aggregation, manipulation, integration, mining, and analysis, including structured and unstructured data sources is required.

  • Strong motivation, passion, and commitment to science and patients is required.

  • People management/leadership experience is required.

  • Experience building teams is preferred.

  • Experience in generating data visualizations in tools (e.g. Spotfire, Vortex, Tableau, DataWarrior) is preferred.

  • Ability to organize and communicate complex data sets in a clear and concise manner to key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds is required.

  • Prior experience working with or leading collaborations with external academic, biotechnology, and contract research organizations is preferred.

  • Strong publications and/or proven record of supporting discovery of clinical/pre-clinical candidates is preferred.

  • Availability to travel up to approximately 10% yearly is preferred (international as well as domestic) is required.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $157,000 to $271,400. The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
