COUNSEL - NON-PROFIT TAX AND GIFTS, Office of the General Counsel (OGC), to provide advice, guidance and assistance on a wide range of tax issues facing large non-profit organizations and universities. Will work in a collegial team environment of a fast-paced law office serving a research university renowned for creativity, innovation and bold risk taking; be trusted and relied on by MIT’s Vice President and General Counsel and the OGC lawyers for their leadership, judgment, and objective advice; and provide advice on federal, state, local and international tax matters, including key MIT transactions involving university donations, complex gift agreements, tax-exempt bond issuances, analysis of legislative and political actions, analysis of planned giving opportunities, and analysis of private benefit and private inurement issues.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: admission to the Massachusetts Bar or admission to another state's bar and ability to promptly gain admission to the Massachusetts bar ; experience as a tax lawyer with nine or more years in law practice; excellent oral and written communication skills and strong academic credentials; the ability to organize and manage multiple projects and prioritize competing client needs in an often-changing, cutting-edge environment; grounded judgment but highly flexible thinking; polished communication and diplomacy skills; and the ability to perceive and explain to non-lawyers the practical application of law and policy in complex situations. PREFERRED: Law firm experience serving non-profit clients; and practice expertise in the following areas: Charitable Giving, Business Tax, Non-Profit Organizations, Employee Compensation, Finance, International Taxation, and Charitable Trusts.
