Job Summary

The Assistant Director is a critical contributor to the work of the broader Identity and Culture team in Student Affairs, which invites and supports students to explore issues of identity, build community, develop intercultural skillsets, and engage across campus on issues of inclusion and diversity. The Identity and Culture departments consists of the Center for Multicultural Life, the Rachel Lord Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, the Sexuality Women and Gender Center, the Student Accessibility Office (reports to the Office of the Dean of Students), and Bowdoin’s Upward Bound program.

The Assistant/Associate Director is primarily tasked with operational oversight and mentorship of Bowdoin’s 30+ student affinity groups. Additionally, they support existing departmental programming initiatives, as well as develop and implement collaborative programs to further the work and reach of the Identity and Culture team. The Assistant/Associate Director will bring expertise and enthusiasm in organizing and planning events; coaching students on club engagement and leadership; and being a resource for students who engage with these offices on matters pertaining to race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, first-generation status, among other identities.​

    Education/Skills Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Knowledge of student engagement with college-level students

  • Skill in working with college students from different backgrounds

  • Ability to serve the needs of a very diverse student population

  • Skill in developing robust and meaningful programming for college students

  • Ability to support Center directors in achieving team goals

  • Skill to work with college students around programming decisions

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students via emails, social media, and public speaking.

    Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

This is an entry level position, with no previous experience required.

1-3 years in a related position preferred.

Standard Work Days and Hours

This is an 11-month (.92 FTE ) position with the expectation of approximately 40 hours/week, while much of the work will take place Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., there will be regular evenings and some weekends as well, especially around the start of each semester.

This is an exempt position requiring the time commitment necessary to satisfactorily complete all job requirements.

Residing in on-campus housing is a requirement of this position as it is necessary to complete the job duties required.
