FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Psychology with a starting date in August 2025, with a research focus in Cognitive or Behavioral Neuroscience.

Brooklyn College has created a Neuroscience Minor and is introducing a Neuroscience Major in Fall 2025 to support highly interdisciplinary curriculums at the undergraduate and graduate studies levels. We currently maintain an NIH funded BP-ENDURE program to support undergraduate research in neuroscience and our NSF-funded REU program also emphasizes neuroscience research training, both to stimulate interest among under-represented student populations. The Psychology Department is part of the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences and, in addition to undergraduate programs, offers doctoral training through the Psychology Doctoral Program at the CUNY Graduate Center, and master’s level programs in Psychological Research, Mental Health Counseling, and Organizational Psychology.

We seek a collaborative faculty member pursuing a research program in neuroscience and are specifically interested in candidates with expertise in cognitive neuroscience and/or behavioral neuroscience, whose research program seeks to elucidate neurobiological mechanisms of cognition broadly defined. Faculty are expected to develop their own program of research (including seeking extramural funding), actively participate in the department’s teaching and service responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels and engage in student mentorship beyond the classroom.

A research program in Cognitive Neuroscience could include a focus on cognitive processes, broadly defined, from basic learning and memory processes to affective processes with translational implications. The person should bring expertise in non-invasive neurophysiological methods (fMRI, EEG, tDCS, TMS, cTBS, etc.) and computational expertise for advanced data analysis (machine learning).

A research program in Behavioral Neuroscience would include a focus on animal models and problems related to motivation, learning and memory, cognitive processes, and/or substance abuse. The person should bring expertise in electrophysiology, fiber photometry, calcium-imaging, chemogenetics, and/or optogenetics techniques to complement our current expertise in systems-level, neuroanatomical, and neurocomputational levels of study.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching undergraduate, master’s, and/or doctoral courses.

  • Developing and maintaining a funded research agenda.

  • Advising, mentoring, and training undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Participating in college, department, and/or university committees, and various other service commitments (e.g., curriculum development, student outreach).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in Psychology or related field from an accredited institution (including candidates who expect to complete their degree prior to the start date).

  • A record of published research in peer-reviewed journals or potential for success in securing external funding.

  • Ability to teach undergraduate or graduate courses or potential for excellence in teaching, including online teaching, and in scholarship.

  • Ability to teach in modalities offered at Brooklyn College such as face-to-face, online (synchronous and asynchronous), evening, and weekends (Note: Teaching assignments are made by the department chairperson in consultation with instructors and faculty).

COMPENSATION

$72,667 - $82,928; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
