Summary This Motor Vehicle Operator position is in the VISN 1 Laundry services located at the Brockton, MA campus. This position is a full-time at 40 hours per week. Responsibilities The incumbent must be able to perform the duties required of the position without more than normal supervision. Typical duties include, but are not limited to: Operates vehicles as described above, having transmission with four (4) or more forward speeds, often having two (2) or more gear ranges, for carrying clean and soiled linens, on and off station through all kinds of traffic and weather conditions. Delivers clean linen and pick up soiled textiles from any of the 10 VA facilities of New England: August, ME, West Haven, CT, Bedford, MA White River Junction, VT, Providence, RI, North Hampton, MA, West Roxbury, MA, Boston, MA, Manchester, NH and Brockton, MA. Safely operates a Box truck weighing 26000 lbs. with proper loading and unloading techniques, keeping trip tickets, gas receipts and mileage reports and performs pre-tip inspections; properly uses load strapping and the proper dock plates at different docks. Delivers clean linen to ensure that the patients of all VA's in New England have aesthetically clean linen for their beds, swimming, personal clothing, in all clinics, physical therapy and surgery. Handling carts containing soiled linen, wearing the appropriate provided equipment (typically gloves) and will also operate large capacity industrial washer extractors and dryers when not driving, or as needed. The work involves recurring box truck operation, i.e., loading, unloading, driving in highway traffic, load strapping, dock plate using, packing in and delivering linen and picking up soiled linen from approximately 10 delivery points.(6 states,10 VA facilities). Observes normal safety precautions while driving especially in heavy traffic, inclement weather, and other road hazards Will use precaution in the handling of carts containing soiled linen, will wear the appropriate provided equipment (typically gloves). Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Drives at this grade may exert moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on the tractor to hook-up service lines, lower landing gears, and climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo, and make limited emergency repairs such as replacing an electrical fuse or installing air in the tires on an open highway. May have to break ice pack and snow from couplings during all inclement weather. Must be able to climb into backs of trucks, lift and maneuver dock plates for safe loading and unloading. Must be able to push and pull carts onto trucks, carts weigh in excess of 800 pounds (on casters). Loading and unloading up to 32 carts at one facility. The driver operates the vehicle in all types of traffic, weather and in other types of driving conditions, and may be exposed to the dangers of serious accidents. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road construction and interchanging systems. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
