Job Summary

GKN Aerospace is seeking a highly skilled Senior Electromagnetic Design Engineer with electric propulsion design experience to join our innovative team.

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of flight through the design, development, prototyping, and testing of high-power, high-performance electrical machines and drive systems for future aircraft propulsion. Your expertise will be crucial in contributing to a significant technology development project aimed at achieving greener aviation and protecting our environment for future generations. You will be required to spend at least 3 days a week in the office collaborating with the team.

Job Responsibilities

  • Own the electromagnetic design and analysis of electric machines from requirements definition, through to concept, detail analysis, test and verification

  • Provide engineering analysis and first principle calculations in support of your electromagnetic designs or in order to validate peers results

  • Lead the selection of electrical machine type, topology, sizing to support high level requirements

  • Support technical discussions with customers during RFI phase and during the programme development, as well as other business development activities

  • Lead and support ‘hands on’ development activities of electromagnetic materials and novel design solutions in the workshop

  • Liaise with suppliers and partners in support of the design and development of electric propulsion systems

  • Lead capability development in electromagnetic simulation and support testing activities to ensure end to end verification processes

  • Identify and pursue opportunities for technical innovation and intellectual property (IP) development, publication and conferences

  • Generate technical reports and presentations to support technical reviews and TRL gates

  • Support robust forward planning of technical work in the design office and workshop activities in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team

What you'll bring

To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:

Essential:

  • Experience of electromagnetic design of electric machines

  • In-depth experience in the use of electromagnetic and thermal modelling simulation tools ( eg Comsol, Simcenter, ANSYS Maxwell and MotorCAD)

  • Strong understanding of engineering principles for electromagnetic design and analysis, and experience generating first principles calculations

  • Good understanding of motor control and power electronics engineering principles applied to the design and interactions with electrical machines

  • Knowledge of materials and effects of properties in the design and analysis of electric machines

  • Experience with FMEAs and safety critical engineering practices

  • Experience in the design of PMSM, IM, SynR and any other high performance topologies for electric machines in traction/propulsion applications

Desirable:

  • Experience in the design and analysis of electromagnetic components for cryogenic environments would be highly desirable

  • Good understanding of mechanical working principles of electric machines

  • Experience in vehicle electrification

  • Familiarity with system engineering standard practices for the development of complex systems

  • Experience of electromagnetic design of electric machines, especially for high performance traction/propulsion applications

  • Experience in simulation of vibration, failure conditions, fault tolerance analysis and NVH for electric machines

Your ability to adapt your communication style to different audiences will be crucial in ensuring seamless collaboration and understanding across our multidisciplinary teams.
