Job Summary:

Provides director or indirect care to a varying number of patients and performs various functions associated with hemodialysis treatments independently and under the direction of a registered nurse.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to ensure quality outcomes for the dialysis patient.

  • Participates in quality improvement activities to include collection of data and machine maintenance.

  • Performs surveillance and testing of dialysis water treatment equipment and dialysis water (such as chlorine, pH, water cultures) to ensure that these machines are operating within the parameters set within the manufacturer guidelines. Monitors and troubleshoots dialysis machine and RO/water system.

  • Demonstrates clinical competence and knowledge in cannulation of dialysis access and proper care and use of central lines. Demonstrates an in-depth understanding of infection control and prevention of transmission of blood borne pathogens. Demonstrates proficiency in performing dialysis treatments and in cannulation of vascular access.

  • Provides patient education/teaching applicable to the patient's medical condition.

  • Sets up and monitors equipment for procedures both during and after.

  • Prepares patients for procedures by taking vital statistics and reviewing dialysis orders and lab work. Notes and documents patient's condition during procedure via observation, interview, and monitoring of vital statistics; reports abnormal assessment findings. Contributes to the assessment of patients by collecting data for analysis by an RN.

  • Obtains, processes, and transports blood samples and culture specimens as ordered.

  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or education equivalency for licensing

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Constant use of speech to share information through oral communication.

  • Constant standing and walking.

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.

  • Frequent sitting, reaching and keyboard use/data entry.

  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.

  • Frequent use of smell to detect/recognize odors.

  • Frequent use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.

  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.

  • Occasional lifting/moving of patients.

  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.

  • Occasional driving.

  • Rare crawling and running.

REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
