Job Summary and Qualifications

The Regional Assistant Vice President of Medical Transportation, in collaboration with the Regional Vice President of Patient Logistics and Medical Transportation, is responsible for driving all parts of the medical transportation strategy and 24/7 clinical operations for their assigned divisions. This span of control is across the designated region with strong alignment with division and hospital leaders, physicians, and key HCA stakeholders; while holding oversight of all noted operations ensuring all key compliance and regulatory policies are adhered to. Under the direction of the RVP and the Corporate AVP of Medical Transportation, establishes a regionally focused strategy for the movement of patients into and out of HCA from a multitude of access points through leveraging both HCA transportation programs and local EMS affiliated agencies with intent in optimizing the best options for timely access to care. In collaboration with the Patient Logistics Center, implements processes that enable volume growth and competitive advantage through medical transport initiatives; aligning to drive a regional approach to patient flow, throughput, and medical transport. Provides direct reporting leadership to all HCA medical transportation programs across the divisions and hospitals supported, facilitating clinical quality enhancements and process improvements for the betterment of patient care. Collaborates with division and hospital leaders to support EMS contracting, the execution of the medical transport strategy including tracking & reporting of key performance indicators for both HCA owned medical transport programs and affiliated EMS partnerships that support the markets within the regional area of coverage, and the many medical transport programmatic components that ensure compliance & optimal clinical care for our patients. Lends support to RVP and Patient Logistics AVP in emergency preparedness; acts as the leader for any medical transportation needs during patient evacuation efforts in the event of emergent circumstances across the region or Enterprise. Facilitates the resolution of issues and roadblocks to the progress of the many initiatives under the medical transport scope of services and responsibilities.

In conjunction with Division Leadership for the assigned region, this position is charged with the following responsibilities for medical transportation strategies & operations. These include (but are not limited to):

  • Under the guidance of the RVP, drives all aspects of the medical transportation strategy & operations, providing direct leadership oversight for the transportation program leaders in their region, ensuring strong alignment with division leadership in the direction of this strategy as it continues to evolve in footprint and span of services.

  • Leads and develops direct reports who oversee daily medical transportation program operations. Provides leadership oversight in all aspects of HR & people management, assurance to clinical competencies and outcomes, operational processes and efficiencies, compliance and regulatory adherence, etc.

  • Supports division and hospital leaders in EMS contracting and assurance to key compliance and regulatory requirements

  • Aligns with Patient Logistics leaders in collaborative strategies to assist hospitals with patient flow and throughput initiatives that have any benefit from medical transportation.

  • Supports the implementation and on-going HCA hospital adoption of multiple Enterprise wide technology applications that intersect with patient logistics & medical transportation, including but not limited to Teletracking software, Image Trend technologies, Flight Vector software, etc.

  • Works with facility executive teams, medical and nursing leadership, and the Physician and Provider Relations team to promote volume growth and competitive advantage through development of differentiating strategies.

  • Through knowledge of the market, competitive landscape, and use of medical transport analytics, partners with RVP to identify and communicate potential business opportunities to division and hospital leaders for further growth.

  • Works with division and hospital management, departmental and interdepartmental staff, and physicians in identifying operational opportunities and inefficiencies, assists in the development and evaluation of alternatives and solutions, and drives the establishment of action plans for improvement. This includes the responsibilities and direct oversight for all span of controls areas noted in Medical Transport.

  • Aligns with Corporate and division compliance teams to provide support in the area of EMTALA as it pertains to transfer cases and medical transport. Supports RVP in all initiatives around EMTALA and other compliance initiatives with the Patient Logistics leader team and staff through training, consistent chart audits, and compliance reporting to hospital, division, and corporate when needed.

  • Collaborates with RVP in emergency preparedness and acts as support for any needed medical transport efforts in the event of emergent circumstances across the division or Enterprise.

  • Works in partnership with Division CFO and RVP in the evaluation of division driven medical transport strategies

  • Collaborates with RVP to present the medical transportation strategic initiative updates at Corporate, division, and key stakeholder meetings; including to key physician groups, hospital leadership teams, and other parties as needed.

  • Under guidance of the RVP, serves as the liaison/facilitator of communication with any vendors providing medical transport services. Ensures alignment with Division CFOs in all aspects of these vendor relationships

  • All other duties as assigned

Skills Required

  • Demonstrated leadership in driving initiatives across a region with multiple key stakeholders, including development and implementation of the strategic vision

  • Proven leadership competency in leading others and developing high performing teams, customer needs and expectations, human resource management, financial outcomes, strategic vision and execution, marketing initiatives, and continuous improvement skills

  • Must have a proven track record of success for medical transport in creating and executing operational and clinical growth strategies

  • Knowledge of the operations and leadership of medical transportation programs

  • Knowledge of relevant metrics used to measure quality and efficiency of care and services in medical transportation programs

  • Knowledge of governmental regulations, medical transport regulations, EMTALA and compliance requirements related to the provision of medical transport services.

  • Participative management style and an ability to work in a heavy matrix environment

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people, including but not limited to Corporate/Division leadership, patient logistics leadership, staff from information technology and clinical backgrounds, physicians, and external vendors

  • Must be independent, driven, self-motivated, and passionate with an exceptional work ethic, executive presence, integrity and presentation skills, both oral and written

  • Ability to work well under pressure on concurrent, multidisciplinary projects

  • Excellent attention to detail and creative problem solving abilities

  • Expert knowledge of various external market forces affecting patient logistics centers and medical transport

  • Ability to establish credibility and be decisive

  • High level of strategic acumen, with strong analytical skills and ability to solve problems in a timely basis Proven ability to lead and develop others; fostering a culture of development and inclusion

Must Have:

  • 3-7+ years of experience in medical transportation management strongly preferred

  • Must have held leadership positions (reflecting increasing levels of responsibility) in roles where driving a strategic initiative was evident

  • Bachelor's Degree (Master's Preferred)
