Job Description

Title: Teen Services Specialist

Department: Brooks Memorial Library

Nature of work:

Perform para-professional work providing a full range of library services. Responsible for all

aspects of teen services and space, including programming, collection development, outreach,

promotion, drafting policy, and supervision of teen room. Duties involve reference, readers

advisory, circulation, and the training of youth services clerk staff and volunteers. Maintain Youth

Services section of library website. Collaborate with Youth Services Librarian on programming

and collection development for childrens room. Provide back-up and/or substitution for

childrens programming and reference service when the Youth Services librarian is unavailable.

Regularly staff Childrens Room circulation desk.

Work Schedule: Full-time 37.5 hours per week; Monday Friday including Saturdays in schedule

rotation and Friday evenings as required for teen-only programs.

Wages: \$21.47 per hour

Supervision Received: Receives supervision from Youth Services Librarian.

Supervision Exercised: None.

Essential Responsibilities:

Empower teens by providing materials, resources, and programming for education,

entertainment, and engagement, as outlined in the service priorities of current strategic

plan.

Collaborate with Youth Services Librarian to provide support for childrens collection

development, programming, and public service.

Foster personal and supportive relationships with teen library patrons.

Supervise, manage, and recruit for Teen Advisory Group.

o Schedule and prepare for monthly meetings, including meals.

o Manage projects and programs for the teen volunteers and delegate responsibilities

(where possible).

o Implement suggestions, feedback, and requests from meetings.

Competencies Needed:

We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and

transferable skills as qualifying, unless specifically stated as required.

A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience working with youth or a public

library or a college degree.

Demonstrated ability to work with teens, children, and adults.

Ability to remain current with literature, trends, and topics for young adults.

Extensive knowledge of different stages of adolescence.

Experience with strategies of positive relationship building with youth, including

developing outside assets such as allies, opportunities, and supports within the

community.

A strong commitment to respectful and compassionate customer service and an ability

to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with library patrons and staff

of many ages and from many levels of ability and experience with technology.

Strict commitment and adherence to personal privacy and patron confidentiality.

Flexibility to prioritize tasks and re-direct attention to meet immediate needs.

Flexibility, excellent time management and high attention to detail and capacity to

prioritize tasks. Ability to balance multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.

A willingness to examine existing systems and refine or improve them as necessary.

Must be forward-thinking and open to innovation and change.

Ability to work independently or in a team environment on difficult or complex task s.

Ability to exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact in engaging with the public and co-

workers, making proper disposition of problems and appointments.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and

volunteers from the Town as well as from other agencies and the public.

Knowledgeable in techniques and practices for dealing with individuals from various

socioeconomic and ethnic groups in person, on the telephone and/or any form of

communication.

Must be able to learn and retain instructions, policies, and procedures.

Work Environment: Work duties are primarily performed in a public library setting in a
