What you will do:

  • Establish wheat breeding program objectives, drive strategic decisions, and ensure plans are executed to drive genetic gain in the field
  • Strong familiarity with technology applications that support and accelerate breeding such as molecular breeding, high throughput phenotyping, genomic selection, data analytics, etc.
  • Drive's development and implementation of innovation to enhance breeding progress, field testing efficiency and continuous improvement of data quality
  • Partner with key stakeholders across business units (ex, Retail and Sustainability groups) to ensure cross functional business objectives are attained
  • Assists in budget development for the station/region and responsible for capital and budgetary oversight and for the care and maintenance of company assets
  • Establish and maintain a strong wheat team culture both within the breeding and testing teams while also driving a productive relationship and influence with Nutrien divisions engaged in wheat sales
  • Driving our culture of care, ensure our breeding program operates in alignment with Nutrien's S,H & E, Compliance and Stewardship requirements, and Business Code of Conduct standards
  • Lead the personal development of team members and the implementation of a cohesive team environment utilizing Nutrien's performance management system which includes objective setting, coaching, and providing clear and timely feedback
  • Leads the recruiting, hiring, and onboarding process for new full time team members and seasonal staff, as required
  • Domestic travel required with occasional overnight stays. Seasonal travel to off-station testing locations and trade show meetings. Stays at off-station production/nursery locations may extend up to a week. Potential allergens: pollen, fungal spores, chemical pesticides in the field or greenhouse

What you will bring:

  • PhD required, preferably in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Genomics or related field
  • 6+ years of related experience required, preferably in wheat breeding and yield testing experience
  • 2+ year(s) of demonstrated people leadership experience of complex organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement team strategy in alignment with higher level organizational goals
  • CDL Class A license preferred. Ability to acquire a CDL Class A license within 1 year of hire required
  • Pesticide Applicators License preferred. Ability to acquire a Pesticide Applicators License within the 1 year of hire required
  • Knowledge of ; 1) best practices in agronomic management; 2) precision planting equipment; 3) commercial or research combines operations; 4) data management software (Genovix, or similar); 5) seed technology industry and plant breeding methodologies; 6) plant genetics and breeding (wheat preferred)
  • Capable of working in high or low temperature conditions in the field or greenhouse
  • Able to lift seed bags up to 50 pounds
