Job Summary

The Graduate School (https://apptrkr.com/get_redirect.php?id=5026472&targetURL=https://www.colorado.edu/graduateschool/about) at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks applicants for the non-tenure-track position of Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor, to begin fall 2024. This faculty member will be rostered in the Department of Applied Mathematics (APPM) (https://apptrkr.com/get_redirect.php?id=5026472&targetURL=https://www.colorado.edu/amath/) and teach primarily in the MS in Data Science (MSDS) (https://apptrkr.com/get_redirect.php?id=5026472&targetURL=https://www.colorado.edu/program/data-science/about) . The successful applicant will be fluent in applied mathematics and statistics for data science, including proficiency in R or Python programming language; and will be prepared to teach data science courses including statistical methods, regression, and statistical learning. Preference will be given to applicants who are qualified to teach a wide range of applied mathematics and statistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, including large lower-division classes (between 90-150 students). The ideal candidate will assist in the development of data science degree programs. Additional responsibilities may include application reviews, coordinating multi-section courses, supervising teaching assistants, serving on departmental committees, supporting growth in the university's data science degree offerings, and advising data science students.

This faculty member will report to the Chair of APPM and will work in close collaboration with the Faculty Director of the MSDS. Teaching-track faculty compose the core full-time teaching faculty team in APPM and the MSDS and play a fundamental role in the educational and service missions of the university. In 2021, through a collaboration between the Graduate School and Departments of Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, and Information Science, the University of Colorado Boulder launched an interdisciplinary MS in Data Science with two modalities: an asynchronous, online professional Master of Science degree in Data Science hosted on the Coursera platform, and an on-campus, in-person professional Master of Science degree in Data Science.

The degree programs are interdisciplinary drawing on CU Boulder faculty expertise in statistics, applied mathematics, data science, computer science, information science, geospatial analytics, natural language processing, business analytics and more. The curriculum offers technical depth and functional breadth that also emphasizes cross- functional communication and teamwork, skills vital to data scientists who increasingly work with partners across a wide spectrum of domains.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • The teaching requirement for this appointment is 5 semester courses per academic year.

  • As part of the 20% leadership and service commitment, the incumbent will be asked to participate in the admissions and recruitment cycle (primarily through reviewing applications for the MSDS), new student orientation, and commencement; the incumbent may also be asked to coordinate multi-section courses, develop curricula and pedagogical techniques, assist in the administration of the data science degrees, and/or advise data science students.

  • The initial appointment effective July 2024 will be as lecturer in the Graduate School. Appointment as teaching assistant professor or teaching associate professor will be effective at the beginning of academic year 2024-2025. This teaching-track appointment is a 9-month academic year position for an initial term of three years, with reappointment contingent upon satisfactory performance.

What We Can Offer

  • We can offer an academic year salary range of $80,000 - $95,000 at the teaching assistant professor level, or $95,00-$110,000 at the teaching associate professor level, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

  • Salary for the summer lecturer appointment will be a pro-rated amount of the academic year salary of the individual hired.

What We Require

  • PhD in the mathematical sciences, statistics, data science or a closely related field. "All But Dissertation" (ABD) and strong MS-level candidates with an extensive teaching record will also be considered.

  • Fluent in Python or R.

  • Experience in or proficiency with applied statistical methods for data science, including regression, ANOVA, generalized linear models, and statistical learning techniques.

  • Candidates for teaching assistant professor must have at least 1 year of experience teaching at the university level. Candidates for teaching associate professor must have at least 5 years of experience teaching at the university level. Teaching experience obtained while in pursuit of PhD is acceptable.

What You Will Need

Proficiency with (or experience using) R, statistical methods, regression, experimental design, non-parametric regression, generalized additive models.
