Job Description

NREL has an opening for a Fire Inspector. This position will support all aspects of the Fire Protection Program within the Environment, Safety, Health, & Quality Office. This position will report to the Fire Protection AHJ and will address site wide fire protection activities as a subject matter expert (SME). Key responsibilities include:

Essential Functions

  • Provide inspection services for new construction activities including but not limited to fire barriers (firestopping, fire doors, wall construction) fire sprinklers, fire alarm, underground water supply, signage, and more.

  • Inspect new and existing facilities for compliance with applicable fire and life safety codes, including the IFC, NFPA, and DOE codes/standards.

  • Assist with implementing the NREL Fire Barrier program, including firestopping inspections, review of firestopping submittals, and interfacing with installers.

  • Assist with implementing the NREL hot work program, including review of hot work activities and policy, and inspecting hot work activities.

  • Assist with implementing NREL fire protection system impairment program, including providing oversight and guidance on how to safely impair safety systems.

  • Assist with the oversight of inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire and life safety systems (fire sprinkler, fire alarm, emergency lighting, etc.)

  • Assist with implementing the NREL Wildland Fire Management Plan. This includes defensible space inspections, structure hardening, community engagement, and modification of wildland fire policy.

  • Record inspection findings in databases and in reports. Prepare clear and concise reports.

  • Interface in a professional manner with a wide range of staff including scientific researchers, management, administrative, safety personnel, construction management, fire department personnel, and external stakeholders. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Convey fire prevention principles and requirements to stakeholders.

  • Attend meetings with researchers, architects, engineers, fire department, and other stakeholders.

  • Participate in testing and commissioning of fire and life safety systems as a fire protection subject matter expert.

  • Host tours for local fire departments. Interface with local fire departments as a fire prevention subject matter expert.

  • Read and comprehend construction and system plans.

  • Under guidance of Fire Protection Engineers, Perform plan review of basic fire protection systems.

  • Conduct inspections of hazardous materials and laboratory spaces.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of NRELs fire protection program in accordance with DOE orders and standards, applicable codes, and NFPA standards.

  • Participate in industry associations. Maintain current with new developments and technologies within the fire protection industry.

  • Assist in establishing, modifying, and overseeing fire protection program policies and procedures to support implementation of DOE O 420.1C and other applicable codes and standards.

  • Participate in incident investigations that involve fire.

Basic Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Extensive knowledge in specialized focused business support functions. A comprehensive understanding of both general and specific aspects of business support activities, and their practical application to a wide variety of problems and situations specific to the discipline or field supported. Advanced skills in applicable software packages and office equipment. Considerable project administration and business services skills. Broad knowledge of specific principles, procedures, and practices related to supported fields and disciplines. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, team and interpersonal skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Proficient computer skills, including MS Office Suite, email and ability to quickly learn database software applications such as FileMaker.

  • Ability to learn and apply new codes and standards, especially as it pertains to field inspections and commissioning (e.g., IFC, NFPA 2, 13, 30, 45, 55, 45, 30, 497, 654, 101, 400, 2001, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of or ability to obtain within nine months of employment, International Code Council Fire Inspector I or Colorado Fire Inspector I

  • Possession of or ability to obtain within eighteen months of employment, International Code Council Fire Inspector II or Colorado Fire Inspector II

  • ICC Fire Plans Examiner or Colorado Fire Inspector III

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Specialist IV / Annual Salary Range: $63,600 - $104,900

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
