Job Summary

The Colorado Shakespeare Festival, located on the campus of the University of Colorado Boulder, encourages applications for the Technical Director position for the 2025 CSF Season! This position will support the success of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival by supervising scene shop operations, repertory changeovers, and the maintenance of scenery and props through the CSF season. More details for this position are available in the "Key Responsibilities" section below.

The Technical Director will have some remote responsibilities beginning in January 2025 regarding design and production meetings. The 2025 CSF season begins in May 2025 and responsibilities for this position will continue through August 2025.

The Colorado Shakespeare Festival is a professional theatre company in association with the University of Colorado Boulder. Since 1958, the festival has celebrated and explored Shakespeare and his continuing influence and vitality through productions of superior artistic quality, education, and community engagement.

CSF strives to preserve the classics of the past and pursue the classics of the future. Fueled by artistry and scholarship, the festival seeks to expand the cultural richness of the region by inspiring, challenging and cultivating the imagination of audiences and artists.

Plays are performed in the newly renovated Roe Green Theatre indoors. The festival's education programs reach tens of thousands of school children each year through camps, classes and outreach performances that connect them with the continuing tradition and importance of live theatre and Shakespeare.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Supervise scene shop operations for two-show repertory season including planning, build, load-in, repertory changeovers, and maintenance of scenery / props through the season.

  • Consult with the CSF Production Manager on technical and budgetary feasibility of designs; realization of designs within budget and scheduling; supervising build, installation, rigging, and strike of sets; safety training and oversight; and maintenance of shop and equipment.

  • Work with the CSF Production Manager to ensure deadlines are met within budget and time constraints.

  • Perform skilled carpentry work using a variety of materials related to the construction of theatrical scenery as needed.

  • Supervise and direct up to two Associate Technical Directors.

  • Supervise and instruct the production crew on theatrical skills and standard processes.

  • Supervise and communicate a plan and timeline for transitioning the shop space to tech rehearsal and performance space.

  • Train and supervise staff with varying skillsets.

  • Monitor team safety, morale, and quality control and communicate regularly with the CSF Production Manager to strategize solutions and ensure that build operations are properly resourced.

  • Adhere to the policies set forth in the CSF Standard Access and Locking Procedures.

  • Remote participation in production and design meetings, scenic bid process, construction drawings, and crew hiring.

  • Assist as needed across department lines as designated by the CSF Production Manager.

  • This position reports directly to the CSF Production Manager.

Physical Demands:

  • Perform a variety of physical tasks including but not limited to climbing, stooping, pushing, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and pulling.

  • Work at height in locations including but not limited to catwalks, grids, ladders, and genies.

  • Perform a variety of physical tasks while wearing safety equipment including body harness, hardhat, and safety glasses.

  • Push, pull, lift, and move up to 50 lbs. at times on a repetitive basis.

  • Use of manual dexterity in the operation of tools.

  • Working Conditions and Environment:

  • Working in a variety of environments including but not limited to construction shops, stages, trap rooms, catwalks and grids, warehouses, exposed loading docks, and outdoors.

  • Working environment may be dirty, noisy, in low light, in high humidity, or in a tight and cramped space.

  • Will be exposed, at times, to potentially hazardous materials and equipment.

  • Will regularly be required to wear PPE during work activities.

What We Can Offer

The hourly rate for this position is $23.00 to $26.00 per hour.
