WSP USA Assistant Vice President, Systems Engineer in Boulder, Colorado

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Assistant Vice President, Systems Engineer, for our Boulder, Colorado office. The following locations will also be considered: Houston, TX and Irvine, CA . Be a key leader within WSP USA’s Energy team ranked #9 on ENR’s 2024 engineering list for the Power sector (and #5 overall), strategically focused on meeting our client’s objectives and solving their challenges within the Energy Transition.

WSP USA has an exciting opportunity for you to play a leadership role in and expand WSP's Energy engineering team in the US market with systems engineering as the key mandate. This is a technical leadership role responsible for client project success, team growth and engagement, and delivery/advancement of key expertise within the systems engineering domain. This team provides engineering design and modeling support to projects associated with the Energy Transition such as microgrids and storage, electrification, renewables, and power delivery.

Your Impact

  • Clients/Projects:

  • The role entails overseeing projects and project teams from inception to completion, overseeing all engineering tasks to guarantee project success. Key responsibilities include:

  • Participate in and lead client projects and new pursuits, collaborating across the WSP’s teams and key partners to ensure effective and efficient client outcomes.

  • Serve as a key leader in the Energy Team and in a client-facing capacity as a Subject Matter Expert with accountability for engineered solutions.

  • Develop and manage work plans for addressing technical issues, staying within project timelines and budget

  • Provide technical engineering assistance for projects related to microgrids and BESS, renewable energy, hydrogen, CHP, and electrification and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.

  • Collaborate with other experts within WSP’s broad technical portfolio to enhance current and new service offerings.

  • Foster the development of new and emerging innovations to remain the trusted thought leaders in our industry.

  • Serve as a local leader in the Boulder office, and work with Energy leadership to attract the best industry talent by fostering a work environment that is collaborative, values inclusion and diversity and invites broad, creative thinking – crafting a more attractive place to work, grow and thrive.

  • Lead and grow a team of 3-4 systems engineers by ensuring their experience at WSP is great, that they have the resources and support they need for client projects, and that their careers and expertise are growing in alignment with their individual goals.

  • Working with other leaders in the Energy Team, emphasize employee training and development to create a unique work experience.

  • Inspire, motivate and promote the best of WSP to our clients and communities to ensure strong employee engagement and morale.

  • Support programs such as Safety, Sustainability and Ethics & Compliance

  • Expertise

  • The ideal candidate for this role brings a strong background in energy infrastructure ideally with expertise in the integration of key energy systems including renewables, battery energy storage, and electrification assets.

  • Provide engineering design leadership and support to senior engineers for wind, solar, BESS, CHP, hydrogen, microgrids, district energy, and EV Charge station project layouts, electrical single lines, piping and instrumentation diagrams, control, and communication systems.

  • Possess strong analytical toolsets including the ability to

  • Analyze energy load demands for existing and new facilities.

  • Develop and run models to simulate electrical loads and heat and mass balance calculations for energy systems.

  • Develop financial modeling and analysis tools to evaluate the levelized cost of energy, project NPV, and life cycle costs.

  • Work with project managers to scope and develop studies, modeling, and data collection approaches.

  • Leverage AI and ML toolsets to enhance and find efficiencies in WSP’s existing offerings and capabilities

  • Strong written communication skills for communicating with clients and internal stakeholders including the ability to produce written reports that summarize project methodologies, findings, and deliver recommendations.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience with a college degree or equivalent experience in the engineering consulting industry with a strong focus/background in the battery energy storage, energy modeling tools, renewables development, energy infrastructure and systems integration or equivalent.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or related discipline.

  • Ability to manage and mentor junior staff and support technical development

  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

  • Demonstrated strong competence in analytical techniques and modeling in solving complex technical problems

  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Sound decision-making, strategic thinking, and creative business development capabilities within energy practice.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on clients and/or sector activities.

Compensation:

Expected Salary (all locations): $111,200 - $180,200

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.

Expected Salary (Colorado only): $104,400 - $200,000

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position within the state of Colorado, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location.
