Job Description:

This is a strategic leadership position based in the United States and will serve as a Discipline Leader for our Sustainability Discipline. The selected candidate will lead multi-disciplinary teams working across a range of sectors to deliver comprehensive technical sustainability services including carbon footprinting, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions analysis, life cycle assessments, environmental social governance (ESG) and corporate reporting, sector-specific sustainability audits and analysis, setting and implementing science-based targets, creating decarbonization plans and net zero roadmaps. The role will advance the use of our work with a variety of clients, including those in the private, federal and public sectors. The Discipline Leader will strive to apply and grow these services as stand-alone projects and as part of other multi-discipline projects.

Roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Lead and collaborate with a team of environmental scientists, planners, engineers, and sustainability specialists to deliver complex sustainability projects across various sectors (focused on the transportation, water and industrial).

• Manage ESG due diligence assessments as needed, ensuring thorough analysis and reporting to meet regulatory and client requirements

• Interface directly with clients, including preparing proposals, participating in proposal interviews, defining scopes of work, and actively participating in client and other stakeholder meetings. Partner with client service units to align on discipline growth targets, developing and executing effective business development strategies to expand the firm’s sustainability portfolio.

• Evaluate sustainable materials, sourcing of materials, and correlating economical, market, technical, operational, and other impacts.

• Drive and oversee internal research and development initiatives related to sustainability. This involves coordinating with cross-functional teams to develop innovative solutions to serve our clients.

• Continuously monitor and evaluate the latest trends, research, and technological advancements in sustainability. This includes attending relevant conferences, reading industry publications, and networking with experts in the field.

• Actively disseminate technical knowledge and advancements in sustainability throughout the organization.

• Developing tailored technical strategies to address client needs/complex problems and communicating these strategies effectively to stakeholders. Ensure adherence to firm policies and industry best practices on all projects.

• Learn CDM Smith’s Project Technical Leader skills and project management system, including developing detailed scopes and schedules in conjunction with the project manager.

• Provide technical management and oversight of resources in the Sustainability Discipline, collaborating with delivery leaders and other Technical Discipline Managers to ensure efficient resource allocation and project execution.

• Implement CDM Smith’s quality procedures at both project and task levels.

• Collaborate with sales staff to contribute to proposals in response to current and potential client requests for proposal (RFPs).

• Enhance the firm’s technical brand by authoring white papers, delivering technical presentations, and submitting designs and innovations for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Mentor and develop junior and mid-level staff providing guidance on sustainability best practices and fostering professional growth within the discipline and the firm.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree. 10 years of related experience. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 10 years of related experience

• Bachelor's degree in Science, Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering or related discipline.

• Professional engineering (PE) license Or Professional scientist registration/certification OR Master's degree in Science or related discipline.

• Previous task lead or project manager experience

Skills and Abilities:

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

• Excellent presentation skills (in person and virtually).

• Strong analytical skills to assess environmental impact, performance metrics, and risk across multiple sectors.

• Extensive experience in sustainability with demonstrated expertise across various sectors (experience with the energy, transportation, water and waste sectors is preferred).

• Understanding the development of GHG emission analysis.

• Understanding of developments in U.S and International sustainability policy.

• Understanding of sustainable development and green remediation.

• Able to translate sustainable information to audiences with varying levels of understanding.

• Excels in a team environment with a culture of open communication.

• Active in sustainability professional societies or networks.

Background Check and Drug Testing Information:
