Boston University SUPERVISOR, TAX & REPORTING, Financial Affairs, Comptroller's Office, General Accounting in BOSTON, Massachusetts

The Supervisor of Tax & Reporting is a key contributor to the Boston University's General Accounting and Financial Reporting department. Primary responsibilities include overseeing the preparation of required tax documents, serving as an expert on tax compliance matters, maintaining currency on regulatory changes, leading special projects related to tax and regulatory matters, developing materials and presenting to University groups on tax-related matters. In addition, this position is responsible for managing the long-term process improvement initiatives within and across other departments related to the tax area. This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule, with an expected in-office presence of at least two times/week, in accordance with the University's remote work guidelines.

Major duties of this position include:

  • Responsible for the compliance with federal, state and international tax reporting requirements and the timely submission of federal and state returns, estimates, annual reports and other tax-related correspondence for the University, including its US and international not-for-profit and other subsidiaries.

  • Manage and coordinate the unrelated business income analysis. Collaborate with investment group to develop and maintain due diligence process for partnership K-1s, and to identify reportable unrelated business income for federal and state, and foreign filing requirements.

  • Assist in the review of Form 990 and 990-T which involves compilation and analysis of University data as well as information gathering from various departments.

  • Review work papers to support tax filings such as Excise Tax, Sales & Meals Tax and others.

  • Perform tax research as needed for offices and departments in the context of new activities, as well as legislative changes resulting in new areas of potential tax reporting requirements and/or tax liability.

  • Responsible for communication with and managing the relationship with outside tax professionals for review of University filings and tax planning consultations as well as with any tax software providers.

  • Develop and maintain working relationships with key departments such as the Investment Office and the Office of Global Programs

Pay Rage: Minimum $78,000, Midpoint $117,000, Maximum $156,000. Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field

  • 8 years of accounting experience, preferably public accounting experience

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices

  • Advanced skills utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel, including complex formulas to acquire, organize, and analyze data.

  • Ability to analyze data to determine relevant conclusions and suggest appropriate actions to management

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and ad-hoc requests to meet or exceed deadlines

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Detail oriented, demonstrating accuracy and quality of work output

  • Ability to work independently and/or collaboratively in team environment

  • Self-motivated, proactive, intellectually curious

Preferred Skills

  • CPA

  • Experience with ERP and/or SAP

  • Experience in non-profit industry or higher education
