Boston Public Schools [STIPEND OPPORTUNITY] Adult Ed: Core High School (SY24-25) in Boston, Massachusetts

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Adult Ed Instructor position resides in the Department of Adult Education. The mission of BPS Adult Ed is to provide a variety of flexible programs to ensure that Boston residents have access to quality instruction, job training, and college and career advising. BPS Adult Ed annually serves about 800 adult students who want to learn English, participate in vocational training, or graduate from high school. The high school classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 5:00 pm and 9:30 pm. Start times for each 90-minute class are 5:00, 6:30, and 8:00. Teachers receive 30 minutes of prep time per 90 minutes of instruction. Most positions are for two consecutive classes. Assignments vary based on student need. RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach: A core high school content area (ELA, Humanities, Math, Science, History, Technology, Spanish) Provide high school level instruction. Collaborate and communicate with the school’s leadership and student support team to ensure students receive academic and social-emotional assistance. Prepare for and assist with the organization of student orientations twice per year. Assist in student retention and engagement efforts by maintaining communication with students absent from class and communicating issues with the student support team. Plan and deliver lessons utilizing the Massachusetts College and Career Readiness Standards for Adults and deliver appropriate lessons for students with diverse abilities. Demonstrate cultural proficiency and use effective and culturally-relevant instructional practices. Integrate technology into the classroom as an instructional tool and for personal productivity. Assist the administration team in the administration of all mandated state and local assessments, including DESE pre and post-tests and MCAS Attend district and state-sponsored professional development opportunities sufficient to stay current with instructional strategies for adults Maintain and submit accurate attendance and records on student growth and achievement using the department’s SIS (ALMA). Collaborate with colleagues to ensure a rigorous, joyful, and safe environment. Attend staff meetings and read weekly staff memos in order to stay informed about program and student issues and events. Use the school's SIS, ALMA, to record student grades and attendance. CORE COMPETENCIES: Using the Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Basic Education, the Department of Adult Education has identified priority skills and abilities that all Adult Ed teachers should possess: Effective teachers draw on a body of professional knowledge, research, and standards to respond to the needs of their students within their educational contexts. Teachers have considerable knowledge of what they teach (i.e., mathematics, ELA). They know and understand the content and underlying concepts relevant to what they teach. They understand what constitutes effective teaching strategies and use this knowledge to make the content meaningful to students. Effective teachers know their students well, including their diverse linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. They know how the experiences that adult learners bring to the classroom affect their continued learning. Teachers operate effectively at all stages of the teaching and learning cycle. Teachers have a repertoire of effective instructional strategies and use technology to facilitate learning and expand their students' abilities. Teachers design and implement engaging lessons based on well-defined learning objectives and use evidence-based instructional strategies that promote deep learning, problem-solving, and the transfer of learning across authentic, relevant contexts. Teachers regularly evaluate student progress to measure the effectiveness of their instruction and to ensure they are meeting their students' professional standards and learning needs. They interpret and use student data to assess progress, diagnose barriers to learning, and challenge students to improve their performance. Teachers value continuous learning, both for their students and for themselves. They cultivate a learning environment that nurtures a growth mindset for their students. Effective teachers are reflective practitioners. They identify their own learning needs to best support their students, set student learning and professional practice goals, and participate in a variety of high-quality professional development activities. Qualifications-Required Education: Hold a Bachelor's degree. Hold a valid Massachusetts Teaching License in the relevant content area. Complete state and federal guidelines in order to be fully licensed and “Highly Qualified." Ability to meet the Standards of Effective Teaching established by MA DESE ACLS as outlined above. Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment. Able to model excellent spoken and written English for students learning English in school. Documented success teaching online. Documented ability to teach engaging, organized online lessons that are accessible to students with diverse levels of digital literacy. Qualifications-Preferred Experience teaching in an urban setting. BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali. Prior experience working with adult learners. Terms: BTU, Stipend Compensation Range: BTU Overtime rate, $56.81/hr, 8 hours per week, 15 weeks per semester.
