Boston Public Schools Science Materials Maintenance Technician (SY24-25) in Boston, Massachusetts

OBJECTIVE The Office of Academics is responsible for determining priorities regarding all core curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development district-wide. Specifically, the BPS Science, Technology & Engineering (STE) Department seeks a Science Materials Maintenance Technician. The Science Materials Maintenance & Warehouse Technician (1.0 FTE) will follow established procedures to assemble/refurbish and move completed science packages/kits weighing up to 50 lbs, maintain inventory of science materials, prepare units for delivery, use a forklift to move materials, clean and organize the warehouse, and receive and account for units/materials coming back from schools. SCOPE The Office of Academics is responsible for determining priorities regarding all core curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development district-wide. The BPS Science Materials Maintenance Technician is a full time, year-round position with the BPS Science, Technology & Engineering (STE) Department located at Campbell Resource Center. The Science Materials Maintenance Technician will report to the Science Materials Distribution Manager. The Science Materials Maintenance Technician will will have significant interactions with BPS stakeholders, including teachers, school leaders, and facilities staff members, Science department staff. This position requires expertise in organizational skills, customer service, and working on a team. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Prepare science instructional materials/kits and laboratory materials for classroom use. Organize and maintain the distribution center for efficient preparation, shipping, delivery and receiving of kits. Adhere to distribution timelines during periods of shipping and receiving of materials. Inventory and restock science instructional materials. Identify missing and/or unreturned kits and instructional materials. Learn to safely operate forklift and other machinery used in distribution center Repair non-consumable equipment, when possible, to reduce purchasing costs. Clearly communicate distribution process and how to access materials with teachers, leaders and schools. Perform other related duties as requested by the department leadership. DELIVERABLES Refurbish enough science kits for each distribution cycle (three times a year) Maintain inventory of science kits for each distribution cycle Receive all incoming material and restock in the correct location Communicate and record any missing material needed to complete refurbishment Assist science department and teachers with special projects Maintain a neat work area QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED: High School Diploma or G.E.D. Self-motivated, takes direction and action to deliver excellent service. Completes tasks accurately, thoroughly and in accordance with established processes and procedures. Assumes personal responsibility for all aspects of work: quality, timeliness and results; seeking to complete tasks with little oversight Experience working collaboratively on a team and strong interpersonal skills Physical requirements: sitting, standing, lifting and/or walking a considerable portion of each workday Ability to lift, carry and load materials that weigh up to 50 pounds Basic computer skills - familiarity with Microsoft office and gmail Terms: Managerial, B22. City of Boston Residency is required.
