State of Massachusetts Reference Archivist in Boston, Massachusetts

_ABOUT THIS POSITION:__ Acting on behalf of the Secretary of the Commonwealth, the Massachusetts Archives is responsible for securing, preserving, and managing for the public good those noncurrent records of state government deemed to have archival (permanent) value. The collection ranges from records created by the government of Massachusetts Bay in the 1630’s through contemporary legislative and executive department holdings. * * Working under the direction of the Head of Reference Services, the Reference Archivist is one of a team of archivists providing reference service for the State Archives. The reference staff provides assistance with the collections and resources of the Archives to on-site researchers and also answers telephone, mail, e-mail, and fax inquiries. *REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:* Responsibilities of the position also include maintaining and improving the Archives website to highlight collections, working with Archives and Commonwealth Museum staff to research in-house and on-line exhibits, providing outreach services, and assisting in the coordination of activities with interns, volunteers, and special projects. Reference archivists may also work with the curatorial staff and electronic records staff to process and manage collections and prepare or update finding aids. *KNOWLEDGES, SKILL AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:* · Interpersonal skills necessary to meet and provide direct service to researchers, with a strong commitment to public service. · Ability to work as part of a team. · Oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and concisely. · Proficiency in the application and construction of databases and other content management tools. · Ability to be organized and to work accurately. · Ability to perform physical work, including lifting and carrying 30 pound boxes. · Management experience to hire, train, and supervise Reference Assistant interns. *About us* The Secretary of the Commonwealth's office comprises 23 departments across 19 locations around Massachusetts.
