Aptim Environmental & Infrastructure, LLC, a leading engineering firm with a global presence and a thriving coastal engineering practice, is pleased to announce an immediate opening in our Tampa, FL office for a mid-level Marine Geoscientist. With a suite of dedicated geophysical instruments, APTIM performs full-scale geophysical surveys in support of coastal restoration, offshore renewable energy development, and a variety of offshore oil and gas applications. APTIM geoscientists specialize in offshore geophysical data collection, processing, and reporting for investigations related to seabed and shallow to medium marine geology that is the foundation for mineral resource identification, regulatory permitting, infrastructure siting, geohazard analysis, pipeline/cable routes, and inspection surveys. The successful candidate will perform a variety of geophysical and geologic work on all phases of projects.

Responsibilities:

APTIM seeks to hire a fulltime marine geoscientist in our Tampa, FL, or Boca Raton, FL offices. The position will involve collecting, processing, analyzing, and interpreting a variety of high-resolution geophysical data including sidescan sonar, shallow-penetration chirp seismic reflection, medium-penetration multi-channel seismic reflection, and magnetometer. Additionally, responsibilities will include the collection and processing of marine vibracores. The employee will use these data to prepare engineering, geological and geohazard maps, technical and scientific reports, and presentations for regulatory, facilities siting, foundation-design and a variety of other engineering applications in a team setting. The candidate must be willing to travel and be able to adapt to challenging offshore environments.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Act as offshore field party chief, managing field projects from planning, execution, logistics, team management, and general safety.

  • Maintain daily activity and safety logs.

  • Provide field QAQC of geophysical and geotechnical data.

  • Collection and interpretation of geotechnical, geophysical, geologic and other scientific data.

  • Development of plans, specifications, analyses, evaluations, maps, position papers, procedures and reports.

  • Communication of technical concepts, evaluation results, plans, reports, etc. via oral presentations.

  • Ensure conformance to applicable technical standards as well as company policies and procedures.

  • Working with GPS, geophysical (chirp sub-bottom, sidescan sonar, magnetometers, etc.) and geotechnical (vibracores, surface grab samplers, etc.) equipment.

  • Open to travel and extended field assignments (2 weeks or longer) in offshore environments.

Qualifications/Competencies/Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in geology, geophysics, geological oceanography, or related field of study.

  • Must have strong technical/scientific writing skills.

  • Experience with multi-channel seismic-reflection survey design, implementation, data collection, and data interpretation are preferred.

  • Experience with additional geophysical systems (including chirp sub-bottom, sidescan sonar, magnetometer) is required.

  • Experience with geotechnical systems (including vibracores and grab samplers, etc.) is required.

  • Marine geophysical data interpretation experience using SonarWiz, Hypack, and Discover Acquisition or related software.

  • Experience with ArcGis, AutoCAD, Surfer software is preferred.

  • Experience mobilizing vessels for geophysical and geotechnical surveys.

  • In addition to Level 1 and 2 competencies has in-depth experience, knowledge and skills in own discipline.

  • Works independently with minimal guidance. Usually determines own work priorities. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.

  • Has expertise in own discipline. Applies knowledge and skills to a wide range of standard and nonstandard situations.

  • Interprets customer needs, assesses requirements, and identifies solutions to nonstandard requests.

  • Uses best practices and knowledge of internal/external business issues to improve products or services in own discipline.
