Essential Functions

The City of Boca Raton has received the Government Finance Officers Association's (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the last consecutive years, and the GFOA's Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the last consecutive years. The City of Boca Raton has a AAA bond rating by Moody's Analytics, Standard and Poor's and Fitch Ratings.

The Financial Services department are a team of fixers. We work to support the City through financial reporting and accounting, accounts payable, payroll, budget, cash management, debt, compliance, purchasing, risk management, special projects, alarm billing, parking enforcement, meter reading and utility billing customer service.

Financial Services provides relevant, timely financial data to the public and decision makers, and safeguards the City's assets through appropriate controls, accounting, and procurement practices.

As a College Student Intern with Financial Services, you’ll work closely with our Accounting Manager as well as internal stakeholders to support ongoing projects and daily operations to produce timely financial statements. In this position you’ll learn what it means to provide public service through governmental accounting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Receive bank statements from our Treasury Manager via Excel, and record daily transactions to post to the appropriate general ledger account within Oracle Fusion Cloud

  • Communicate with internal divisions and departments to fulfill journal entry requests to ensure accuracy of financial documents and compliance with relevant legal regulations.

  • Prioritizes assigned projects and tasks to support the department in producing timely financial statements.

  • Research, analyze and complete assigned projects in a timely manner by working closely with Accounting and Treasury personnel.

  • Assist accounting divisions with financial reports by collecting information, preparing balance sheet, profit and loss statements, banking and investment transactions, financial statements entries, and other reports.

  • Assist department with audits and resolving discrepancies depending on the needs of the tax periods.

  • Attending meetings and seminars to expand knowledge of the accounting and financial fields.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Standard modern office practices and procedure

  • Business and Accounting English usage and spelling

  • The theory, principles, methods, and best practices of governmental accounting.

    Skilled in:

  • Communication – both oral and written, especially as related to providing detailed communications to internal clients

  • Critical thinking – using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

  • Microsoft Office Suite products to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, to an moderate degree of proficiency.

  • Writing Composition - write professional and effective letters, memos, emails, reports, and supporting documentation.

Ability to:

  • Work independently with minimum supervision.

  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with associates and supervisors.

  • Ability to multi-task.

  • Prepare, analyze, and evaluate financial systems.

  • Conduct themselves in a professional manner

  • Maintain the confidentiality of any information obtained through the Internship Program.

  • Have a very high sense of rigor and attention to detail to prevent any form of mistake and identify variances for accuracy that may occur in the process of documenting financial information.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Program Term:

The Financial Services Department accepts Interns during each college semester.

Available Positions:

The Financial Services Department hosts up to two (2) Interns per college semester.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to general eligibility information, candidates seeking to be considered for an Internship in Financial Services must meet or comply with the following requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in, or will be entering, their junior year, or higher, at an accredited College or University as a full or part-time student.

  • Has completed basic undergraduate level coursework in accounting, business and/or finance.

  • Has a current minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

  • Able to work a minimum of 12 hours per week not to exceed a maximum of 25 hours per week (typically between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday).

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completed junior year of undergraduate studies by June 2024, with an anticipated graduation by end of 2025.

  • Has successfully completed coursework which includes a moderate degree of proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Data analysis

  • Preference will be given to those candidates with previous experience in accounting or finance OR with those candidates working towards a bachelors/master's degree in accounting or finance.

  • Occasionally working in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation or the like

  • Occasionally working with equipment or performing procedures where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, or muscle pulls

  • Continuously demonstrating regular in office attendance

CITY OF BOCA RATON - BENEFITS SUMMARY

Part-Time Employees

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible to receive Paid Leave and to contribute to the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, a part-time employee must have worked at least 1,040 hours in the prior fiscal year

PAID LEAVE: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will receive twelve (12) hours of Paid Leave on October 1st. This Paid Leave shall be used no later than September 30th of that fiscal year or it will be forfeited. These hours may not accumulate and may only be granted with the approval of the employee's supervisor. This paid leave has no cash value at separation of employment.

MISSION SQUARE 457 DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will be allowed to participate in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. The City will not provide any matching funds.
