City of Bismarck Traffic Signal Technician in Bismarck, North Dakota

Summary of Position:

Traits required to succeed in this role: self-starter , work independently with minimum supervision , problem solver, and also to work as a member of a team. Both written and verbal communication is necessary to complete daily tasks; communication with co-workers , supervisors, and the public is a must.

This position requires a variety of specialized tasks including, but not limited to, good computer skills, configuring signal controllers, Ethernet switches, vehicle detectors, emergency vehicle detectors, setting mast arms, span wire, pedestrian poles, traffic signal equipment, troubleshooting, exposing and repairing underground faults, working in an aerial lift truck repairing whiteway and traffic signal heads and various equipment. Locating and marking City utilities with flags and paint using various locating methods such as GIS, computers, maps, and locating equipment. Work with a wide variety of electrical/electronic testing and measuring devices for the purpose of trouble shooting and repairing malfunctions in traffic control and/or white way equipment.

Typical Hours/Days: 7:00 am - 3:30pm or 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday. Hours and Days will vary with weather events, seasonal work, on-call schedule, and emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma (GED) and technical/trade school; along with three years experience in electrical, electromechanical or electronics work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Within 6 months of hire, must be able to obtain a North Dakota Class B driver's license with air brake endorsement.
  • Must be able to attain a Level 1 Work Zone Safety Certificate within the first year of employment.
  • Must be able to attain certification for a Traffic Signal Technician as administered by the International Municipal Signal Association within 2 years of hire.
