Develops, implements, and maintains programs, policies, and procedures to measure and reduce employees' exposure to physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic stress factors. Conducts environmental monitoring as needed to ensure employees are protected from health and safety hazards.

  • Manages and calibrates equipment used to collect air and noise samples.
  • Operates and directs the use of industrial hygiene equipment. Interfaces with the analytical lab to coordinate sampling and analysis. Produces industrial hygiene reports and explains information to relevant department(s).
  • Evaluates the need for quantitative assessment of air contaminants, noise, and other physical, biological, and chemical stressors.
  • Conducts environmental testing to confirm the effectiveness of new or existing hazard control systems against appropriate Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs). Provides recommendations for exposure controls when appropriate.
  • Prepares or reviews order specifications for the purchase of safety equipment, ensuring that proper features are present and that items conform to the appropriate health and safety standards.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and interprets statistical data related to occupational illnesses and incidents.
  • Investigates industrial incidents, injuries, or occupational diseases with the assistance of the Corrective Actions Team. Determines root causes and implements corrective or preventative measures. Reports or reviews findings from accident investigations, facilities inspections, or environmental testing. Conducts interviews with various individuals to obtain information about work environments and workplace incidents.
  • Maintains and applies knowledge of current occupational health and safety regulations applicable to AMERICAN's manufacturing processes.
  • Provides consultation and advice on occupational health problems and concerns, when needed.
  • Reviews internal health and safety programs, policies, and procedures to determine their effectiveness and recommends improvements when necessary.
  • Develops materials and processes for health or safety-related training where technical knowledge is needed, including exposure-related issues with complex legal requirements and other requirements, such as those provided by OSHA, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, etc.
  • Advises various parties on workers' compensation claims pertaining to workplace exposures.
  • Reviews and interprets federal and state regulations on safety. Makes recommendations to Company policies or procedures to ensure compliance is maintained and best practices are utilized.
  • Keeps work area clean and orderly. Knows safety rules that apply to the safety of others and to personal safety. Reports malfunction of equipment to proper authority. Performs other work as instructed by supervision.
  • Adheres, supports, and strictly follows Company, quality, and environmental standards and directives while performing job duties for the protection of themselves and others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must exhibit a bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene from an accredited four-year college or university. Proof of degree required. A transcript or diploma would be acceptable and must be provided. OR Must exhibit a bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited four-year college or university with at least one (1) year of previous experience working in an Industrial Hygiene role.   2. Must exhibit the ability to interpret Industrial Hygiene monito ing data and compare against the appropriate Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) to determine compliance and make recommendations for improvements.
  3. Must exhibit the ability to use and maintain Industrial Hygiene monitoring equipment.
  4. Must exhibit strong organization, project management, teamwork, presentation, and strategic planning skills.
  5. Must exhibit strong technical writing and communication skills.
  6. Must exhibit the ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately.
  7. Must exhibit the ability to learn technical systems and analytical or scientific software (e.g., statistical computing programs, chemical management software, etc.).
  8. Must exhibit the ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  9. Must exhibit excellent interpersonal skills, relationship building, and the ability to interact with persons with different socio-economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds.
  10. Must exhibit the ability to learn and interpret technical information, such as understanding and implementing federal and state regulations on safety.
  11. Must exhibit the ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  12. Must be able to work extra hours on weekdays or weekends as required to fulfill job duties.
  13. Must be able to travel as required to perform job duties and represent the Company when needed.
  14. Must exhibit an excellent record of punctuality and attendance.
  15. Must exhibit the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job duties.
  16. Due to the hazardous nature of the job environment (mobile equipment, overhead cranes, etc.), an acceptable level of vision and hearing are required in order to identify and respond to visual and audible warnings in a safe manner.
  17. Must exhibit the ability to work with confidential information and maintain confidentiality.
  18. Must exhibit a current valid driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, or other relevant field of study from an accredited college or university. Proof of degree required. A transcript or diploma would be acceptable and must be provided.
  2. Exhibit certification in Environmental Health or Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or equivalent.
  3. Three or more years' experience working in an Industrial Hygiene role.
  4. Previous experience working in a heavy industrial environment.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS

Sitting required while in office, at keyboard, at drafting table, giving safety orientation, etc.

Standing while taking pictures of machinery, accidents, employees working, etc.

Walking on various surfaces such as gravel, asphalt, and concrete are required to access different areas of the plant. Walking within testing facility on uneven gravel surfaces is required to operate crane, monitoring test, get to different areas of facility, etc.

Climbing stairs to top of cupola and other areas throughout plant is required; step ladder for supplies is required.

Climbing ladder in various areas of the plant is required.

Stooping, kneeling, and/or crouching required to take pictures, file, sample, etc. required.

Crawling required to get into pipe to take pictures occasionally.

Overhead reach required to access equipment and supplies, put equipment on employees.

Forward reach required to put sampling equipment on and off employees, operate equipment, mobile equipment testing, access and catalog videos.

Bended reach required for lower cabinets, accessing tape and slide programs.
