Summary

This leadership position at First Horizon is responsible for developing, implementing, tracking and reporting the sustainability and Environmental, Social and Governance strategies of the organization. This role leads effective collaboration with cross-functional teams to develop and execute initiatives that align with the company's mission and values.

Key Responsibilities Include

General

  • Serve as the company’s sustainability officer responsible for developing, executing, monitoring and reporting on Environmental, Social and Governance strategies and that align with the company’s strategic objectives.

  • Maintain knowledge and expertise on related laws, regulations and other legal developments, while staying abreast of the changing regulatory and legal environment, internal policies, technology and industry trends that impact ESG strategies and the business.

  • Identify and monitor ESG risks and opportunities that help drive shareholder value

Compliance and Internal and External Reporting

  • Oversight of the development, monitoring and reporting of internal ESG initiatives to ensure timely completion of strategy/goals.

  • Lead the company’s compliance with SEC Climate Disclosure Rule and other regulatory and state mandates.

  • Collaborate with internal partners to identify and collect data/content needed to comply with regulatory requirements and reporting needs.

  • Work with external consultants on gap analysis, compliance roadmap and to help guide strategic priorities.

  • Provide quarterly updates and presentations to the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee of the Board, executive management and other leadership teams (as requested).

  • Monitor ESG rating agency reports, progress, and changes, reply to open feedback opportunities, and engage with agencies and third parties as needed.

  • Evaluate and benchmark voluntary reporting and identify gaps and opportunities to improve annual ESG report.

Sustainability

  • Establish and maintain operational sustainability strategy and roadmap in line with organization’s environmental and sustainability strategy and goals.

  • Understanding of sustainable finance categories (green and social) and frameworks

  • Collaborate with internal partners to ensure successful execution of operational environmental/sustainability initiatives (legal, risk, properties, procurement, talent acquisition, etc.).

  • Work closely with internal partners to calculate operational emissions (Scope 1 & 2) and develop reduction plans, projections, and targets. Stay current on changes to policy, technology, and infrastructure to update plan as needed.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Scope 3 emissions (specifically Category 15)

Outreach

  • Provide subject matter expertise, as needed, for discussions with shareholders, bankers and clients

  • Establish and execute community focused nature-based solutions and investment strategy

  • Establish and maintain relationships with environmentally focused community and nonprofit partners.

Communication, Education and Engagement

  • Develop and maintain ESG-related materials for internal and external stakeholders to help increase awareness and understanding.

  • Oversee ongoing environmental/sustainability engagement activities and educational opportunities for associates.

  • Oversight of the ESG-related Working Group and Task Forces

  • Engage in peer and industry based working groups and attend industry meetings and conferences

Qualifications Include

  • 5+ years of related work experience and deep subject matter expertise in sustainability reporting, particularly for financial institutions.

  • Proficiency in established and emerging sustainability disclosure frameworks (voluntary and regulatory), particularly TCFD, SASB (ISSB)

  • Ability and appetite to quickly develop expertise on new and emerging topics.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with a broad set of functional partners within a large, matrixed organization.

  • Excellent organizational, analytical skills and comfort working with large datasets.

  • Experience in environmental and / or climate modelling including in model evaluation and development, ideally applied to business cases
