The Binghamton University Libraries Cataloging and Metadata Department supports the Binghamton University community by providing bibliographic access and control through both metadata and traditional cataloging. Cataloging and Metadata Services is closely integrated with all other departments within the Libraries. The incumbent serves as a member of the team responsible for providing original, adjusted and copy cataloging and bibliographic control for a wide range of print and non-print materials in various formats. A strong commitment to service and user access to information is essential.

The position reports to the Assistant Head of Cataloging/Metadata with the Director of Technical Services as a second-line supervisor. Librarians at Binghamton University are members of the faculty and are expected to contribute significantly to the profession. The salary for this position starts at $60,000 and is commensurate with experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Showing great attention to detail, performs original and complex cataloging for materials in a variety of languages and in all formats, conforming to national and local standards and practices such as MARC, RDA, LCSH, OCLC, CONSER, BIBCO, and LC classification and other standards as catalog and discovery systems develop.

  • Performs associated name, series, and subject authority control work as necessary to maintain database integrity. Participates in the Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO).

  • Participates in other cataloging and metadata projects as assigned.

  • Resolves bibliographic problems associated with, but not limited to, books, serials, and non-print materials in all formats.

  • Assists with bibliographic database problem resolution to ensure records meet local and national standards.

  • Assists with and/or manages special cataloging projects and participates in the creation and maintenance of documentation.

  • Collaborates with staff and faculty including department heads across the Libraries to implement cross-functional initiatives and to resolve questions and concerns regarding records in the online public catalog.

  • Maintains a current knowledge of national and international developments and trends in cataloging, classification and subject analysis, metadata, bibliographic and authority control, and automation of cataloging functions.

  • Participates in a work culture that promotes diversity and anti-racism and actively works to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias.

  • Contributes significantly to the profession to meet the Libraries' standards of scholarship.

  • Participate in library, University and national service.

    Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited Master's Program in Library and Information Studies.

  • Demonstrated experience cataloging special formats such as music, film, media and electronic resources.

  • Demonstrated experience working with Special Collections materials such as rare printed and archival materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply the following cataloging tools: Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and classification, and MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of one or more non-Roman scripts.

  • Experience with serials and/or ebook cataloging.

  • Experience with Alma/Primo or other library services platform.

  • Knowledge of one or more non-MARC metadata formats, especially EAD, Dublin Core.
