The individual in this position will assist with snow removal, landscaping, mowing and general maintenance duties to ensure our grounds are well-maintained and visually appealing throughout the year.DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:Winter Maintenance: •Clear snow and ice from walkways, driveways, parking lots, and other designated areas using snow blowers, shovels, and other appropriate equipment. •Spread ice melt and sand to ensure safe pedestrian and vehicular passage. •Assist with the maintenance and repair of snow removal equipment as needed. Summer Maintenance: •Perform landscaping tasks such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, planting flowers, and weeding flower beds. •Water plants and maintaining irrigation systems to ensure proper hydration and growth. •Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals as directed to maintain the health and appearance of plants and turf. •Maintain and clean outdoor furniture, fixtures, and equipment. •Repair and maintain campus water features. •Repair and maintain campus sprinkler systems. General Maintenance: •Assist with the repair and maintenance of outdoor structures, including fences, benches, signage, and playground equipment. •Assist with the installation of any signage on campus. •Assist with moving furniture, tables, and other university equipment. •Clean and maintain pathways, parking lots, and other paved surfaces, including the removal of debris and litter. •Report any maintenance or safety issues to the supervisor promptly. •Adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations while operating equipment and performing maintenance tasks. •Other duties as assigned. This includes coordinating tasks, assisting colleagues when necessary, and communicating effectively to ensure the smooth operation of maintenance activities. •Time Management: The ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines is crucial in maintaining a well-kept outdoor environment. •Knowledge of Landscaping Techniques: Familiarity with basic landscaping techniques, plant care, and knowledge of different types of equipment used for maintenance tasks is beneficial. This includes understanding proper mowing heights, pruning techniques, irrigation systems, and plant identification. •Safety Consciousness: A commitment to following safety guidelines and protocols is essential to prevent accidents and injuries while operating equipment, using chemicals, and working in potentially hazardous conditions. •Adaptability: Being able to adapt to changing weather conditions, work schedules, and priorities is important in this role. Flexibility in handling tasks and adjusting to unforeseen circumstances is necessary to ensure the grounds are well-maintained throughout different seasons. •Communication Skills: Effective communication skills are vital to convey maintenance needs, report any issues, and coordinate with supervisors and team members. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: •Physical stamina and ability to perform tasks that require repetitive motions, lifting, bending, and working in various weather conditions •Stand and walk for extended periods of time •Bend over, climb, and reach overhead •Kneel, push and pull, crouch/stoop •Lift 50 pounds or more •Repetitive hand movement and firm grasping •Work in severe weather conditions; heat and cold Education Required:•A combination of education and experience focused on grounds and maintenance related duties.Experience Required:•Ability to operate and maintain various ground maintenance equipment, such as lawn mowers, trimmers, blowers, and snow removal equipment.•Knowledge of landscaping techniques, plant care, and safe chemical handling practices.•Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.•Effective communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a teamEducation Preferred:•High school diploma or equivalent with direct experience.Experience Preferred:•Previous experience in grounds maintenance or related field is preferred.Applicants will be reviewed and interviewed on an ongoing basis after the screening date.
