Position Summary

A Kitchen Cook staff member is part of a group of staff who works as a team to provide kitchen/dining hall needs to our many groups and campers. They provide assistance in preparing, cooking and serving food as well as other duties as needed such as working in the dining hall and dishes.

Essential Functions

A kitchen cook is part of the team who assists the food service manager and other cooks in the operation of the kitchen and dining hall. Responsibilities will rotate from kitchen to dining hall to dish room depending on the group and the food service needs. The kitchen cook aids in preparing and serving food, setting up/cleaning the dining hall, inventory, and dishes. This position must be willing to work in a camp setting and work irregular hours.

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects, and reach overhead. Ability to safely and properly use kitchen equipment. Ability to regularly move boxes and food related items weighing as much as 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have ability to work well independently in a detailed, professional and courteous manner.

  • Experience in leading people and the ability to work well with staff, the public and the children we serve.

  • Experience in institutional or large food service setting.

  • Knowledge of and experience in food service: food preparation and service, family style serving, buffet serving, cleaning and institutional kitchen equipment.

  • Must hold current health department certification as required by law.

  • Must hold current certification or licensure for operating a kitchen in the camp’s jurisdiction.

  • Knowledge of current health and safety laws and practices is essential.

  • Knowledge and experience in preparation of special dietary foods.

  • Must be18 years or older.

  • Must possess a valid CA driver’s license.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the sit and facilities, camper and staff behavior.

  • Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing or walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more)

  • Driving Test and clean MVR check (if applicable).

  • If working in the vicinity of children a criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education

Preferred

  • High School or Equivalent or better

Licenses & Certifications

Required

  • Driver's License

  • Food Handler's Card

Experience

Required

  • Experience in preparation of special dietary foods.

  • Current health department certification as required by law.

  • Food service: food preparation and service, family style serving, buffet serving, cleaning and institutional kitchen equipment.

  • Experience in institutional or large food service setting.
