Primary Purpose

The Cloud Architect position within the Information Technology Services ( ITS ) department is responsible for the development and implementation of COCC’s cloud architecture roadmap in collaboration with the system administration team. As ITS continues to grow and innovate, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Cloud Architect to join our talented information technology team. This Cloud Architect is passionate about cloud technologies, possesses excellent project management skills, and will design and implement scalable and secure cloud solutions, while also demonstrating the ability to work as a partner with college stakeholders. This position is also part of the IT senior leadership team and may serve on and/or lead committees and task forces.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Team Leadership:

  • Provide expertise and mentorship to a team of ITS experts on cloud architecting, providing guidance and support to ensure the successful execution of cloud projects.

  • Engage with a collaborative and innovative team culture, encouraging continuous learning and development, contributing to team and individual effectiveness.

Cloud Strategy:

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to understand business requirements and develop a comprehensive cloud strategy and roadmap aligned with organizational goals.

  • Provide thought leadership in evaluating and recommending emerging cloud technologies.

  • Manage and lead M365 SharePoint enhancement and development projects and security practices.

Architecture Design:

  • Join in the design and implementation of scalable, secure, and high-performance cloud solutions.

  • Ensure architecture decisions align with best practices, compliance and security standards, and industry regulations.

Project Management:

  • Manage and prioritize multiple cloud projects as part of a team, ensuring timely and successful delivery within scope and budget.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate cloud solutions into existing systems and processes.

Security and Compliance:

  • In coordination with ITS’ InfoSec team, identify and enforce security policies and procedures for cloud environments.

  • Stay current on security trends and proactively address potential vulnerabilities.

Cost Optimization:

  • Implement cost-effective strategies for cloud resources and continuously optimize infrastructure to maximize efficiency.

Vendor Management:

  • Evaluate and make recommendations on existing relationships with cloud service providers ( AWS , Azure, OCI , etc.), ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and negotiating favorable terms.

    Department Specific

Examples of projects you’d start working on right away:

  • Design and assist teams with building an AWS disaster recover environment that includes a cold VM and Network environment that can be spun up quickly. Also assist with bi-annual failover tests.

  • Work with stakeholders to gather department needs in order to further build out SharePoint environment with the intent of potentially having it take the place of our intranet. This would include configuration and permissions, security tags, data classification and protection.

  • Review, recommend, get buy-in, and then advise/assist ESA team to secure our M365 environment; including making any configuration changes and removing or disabling any unused or unwanted apps (like Sway).

  • Creating policies and documentation on cloud technologies in collaboration with other teams.

  • Experience designing, implementing and leading new cloud architecture projects and strategies in a business environment.

  • Skills and knowledge in mentoring, training, managing, and monitoring technical personnel and teams.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to move initiatives and teams forward to completion of key initiatives.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in individual and group settings, representing the College on a professional basis, both orally and in writing.

  • Project management skills and abilities, specifically organizational, time management, people planning, and resource allocation and tracking.

  • Knowledge and experience with information security best practices.

  • Ability to work well in a team environment and provide excellent customer service.

  • Ability to make spontaneous and professional decisions concerning COCC computer systems operations in unusual situations.

  • Must be able to critically analyze workflow processes, and recommend and oversee appropriate change management tactics.

  • Ability to remain focused on a task(s) during numerous interruptions.

  • Must be proficient with computers; IT networking concepts, enterprise server system administration, hardware, software, databases, Microsoft and its applications.

  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

  • Demonstrated problem solving, collaboration, and team building skills.

    Ergonomic Requirements

Regular office hours are established between 8 am – 5 pm during the workweek. Working hours will include early and late hours with possible weekend work and on-call coverage for emergency outages during off hours and residence hall support.

Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Work is conducted in an ordinary office, mostly sitting. Computer screen is used approximately 75% percent of the time. All individuals are required to be able to perform essential functions without significant risk of injury or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential listed above.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Networking, Data Center/System Administration, or equivalent work experience in an IT or technical environment.

Experience:

  • Three (3) years of designing and implementing cloud architecture projects, with a strong knowledge of cloud platforms ( AWS , Azure, and/or OCI )

  • Two (2) years of total IT technical experience with any combination of the following:

  • Experience supporting and designing M365 Sharepoint

  • Network administration

  • Enterprise server system administration

  • Infrastructure and/or Data Center support

  • Two (2) years of project management/supervisory/lead experience in an IT or technology environment.

License:

  • Valid Oregon Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment. Ability to drive campus vehicles to outlying centers and campuses is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Network Management, Data Center Management, or equivalent.

Experience:

  • In-depth understanding of cloud security, compliance, and best practices.

  • Project management experience with the ability to lead cross-functional teams.

  • Higher education and/or public sector experience.

Certification:

  • Technical certification in any of the following: Project Management, AWS or Azure Solution Architect, Microsoft Sharepoint Specialist, or related technical areas of expertise.
