About the Program/ Department

TheRN-to-BSN program (https://wce.wwu.edu/rn-bsn) was established in 2013 and received a full, 10-year reaccreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) in June 2020. In early 2022, Western's nursing program received support from the Washington legislature, providing annual state funding for the RN-to-BSN and the proposed new MSN. The new MSN program awaits approval from the state's Washington Board of Nursing. The MSN degree will include two specialty tracks: Nursing Leadership & Administration and Nursing Education. The expected launch date for the first MSN cohort is September 2024. We seek to support nurses in our region and across the state, particularly in underserved areas, who desire to continue their professional education and contribute to the well-being of our communities in a rapidly changing healthcare system.

About the Position

Western Washington University (WWU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the nursing program. The position is a 9-month academic year assignment. Summer teaching is optional.The position begins as either a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor. For appointment at the tenure-track Associate Professor level (without tenure), demonstrated significant research and evidence of successful teaching commensurate with standards for promotion to associate professor in the department, college and university. The rank is independent of tenure. Faculty apply for tenure separately once they start their work and term at WWU. Tenure and promotion are granted in the College of Education when qualifications are met and approvals are received.

The desired start date is September 15, 2024. The new faculty member will join a strong, supportive nursing program staff, including an experienced Academic Program Director, a full-time Program Coordinator, a tenured Associate Professor, a part-time Program Advisor, and several excellent adjunct faculty members. The nursing program is offered in a hybrid modality. The current program includes the RN-BSN program. A new MSN program in nursing education and leadership/administration is undergoing approval from the Washington Board of Nursing, with a projected start date in September 2024.

The ideal candidate will help promote the vision of Woodring College (as outlined most recently in itsStrategic Plan (https://provost.wwu.edu/files/2020-03/WCE%20Strategic%20Plan%202018-2025.pdf) ), the HCS Department, and the nursing program. The mission flowing from that vision is grounded in regional needs and developed through academic and practice partnerships. The nursing program curriculum encourages personal and professional growth, responding to the need for nurses' participation in healthcare system reform. It is anchored in a determination to achieve equity in health care, aware of the suffering still being experienced by many individuals and populations due to racism and bias, and the changing demographics of an aging and increasingly diverse population.

Required Qualifications• R.N. Licensure in Washington State prior to the start date

• Earned doctorate or All But Defended (ABD) degree in nursing at the time of application from an accredited university and nursing education program that is accredited by a nursing education accreditation body recognized by the United States Department of Education. If ABD, all degree requirements must be completed by June 15 of the first year of employment (e.g., for a September 2024 start date, all degree requirements must be completed by June 15, 2025).

• Capacity for supporting the success of students traditionally underserved and commitment to working effectively with diverse faculty, staff, students, and university and community stakeholders.

• Demonstrated commitment to and record of cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds in a university setting(s)

Preferred Qualifications• Successful higher-education teaching experience

• Experience successfully teaching and advising graduate students, specifically first-generation and underrepresented student identities.

• Nursing executive/leadership and management experience (i.e., leading and managing people, shared governance, talent acquisition, data-driven decision making, systems thinking and adaptive complex strategies, tools and techniques to navigate complexity, uncertainty, and unexpected disruptions, implementation science, and strategic financial management)

• Experience with nursing career pathways, including RN-to-BSN, RN-to-MSN, and MSN education.

• Knowledge of adult education principles, practices, and philosophies

• Ability to communicate fluently in two or more languages.

• Familiarity with nursing program accreditation standards and procedures

Salary

The starting salary range for assistant professor appointment, tenure-track is generally between $74,000-$85,000, with placement within the position’s salary range being based on qualifications and professional experience. The entire salary range for the assistant professor position is $74,000-$93,000, with the upper end of the salary range typically being achieved through collectively bargained salary adjustments. The starting salary range for associate professor appointment, tenure-track is generally between $88,000-$92,000. The entire salary range for the associate professor position is $88,000-$104,000.
