Director of R&D

You will be accountable for leading an engineering team responsible for support to the Permobil Seating & Positioning portfolio. This includes the Product Development team responsible for design and development of new product offerings, as well as the Sustaining Engineering team responsible for managing the design of on-market products. You will be the single point of accountability for R&D activities within the portfolio and will partner closely with the Marketing team to manage the various NPD projects that define the future of the portfolio.

This position is for someone who is goal driven and enjoys working in a dedicated cross-functional team environment and will have responsibility for leading a multi-disciplinary engineering team. The R&D Director will plan, monitor and coordinate tasks, as well as maintain and update plans and schedules for numerous projects. He or She will direct the activities of internal and external team members to meet project objectives.

An appropriate candidate must be a flexible, self-directed, organized, dependable, proactive, and persistent leader. He or she must effectively plan and manage projects, lead and coach project team members, solve problems, and make decisions with limited direction

Plan, execute, and follow-up on projects to deliver on the New Product Roadmap, the Sustaining Engineering Roadmap

Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams within R&D, Product Management, Project Management, Production, Quality, and Supply Chain. Influence strategic direction and prioritization, while managing delivery and execution

Plan and execute new product development projects from concept to commercialization

Provide strategic program guidance to project teams

Drive strategic capability building of the department. Be an expert in product and industry trends, engineering solutions and best practices, and technology innovation in relevant fields

Prioritize and handle multiple projects in a fast paced and result oriented environment

Ensure resource alignment across the various projects

Report to development steering group with regular cadence to provide transparent communication of roadmap status and issues

Build and support the team’s individual development plans. Continuously improve department processes and efficiency

Requirements:

Bachelors Degree in Engineering Discipline, Advanced Degree preferred

5+ years of design-related work experience. 3+ years of experience leading engineering teams and/or technical project teams

Proven experience with new product launches, preferably leading multi-functional, mult-facetted programs end-to-end; i.e. from pre study and concept phase through development and commercialization.

Experience managing multi-disciplinary, technical resources with demonstrated ability to interact on a technical level

Demonstrated ability to communicate and negotiate with a diverse group of cross-functional stakeholders in Marketing, R&D, QA, Regulatory, Sourcing, and Operations.

Confident decision maker, with a proven ability to negotiate and influence others

Well-versed in Medical Device Design Controls.

Proven knowledge in project or program management

Strong leadership and communication skills

Structured and analytical & problem-solving skills and a process improvement orientation

Strong knowledge and/or experience with electro-mechanical design, manufacturing methods

High competency with 3D Modeling Software systems (preferably SolidWorks)

Ability to work independently; self-starter
