Abbott Legal Counsel in Basel, Switzerland

Abbott is seeking a Legal Counsel to support its Established Pharmaceuticals Division (EPD) based in Allschwil-Basel, Switzerland. This role will provide legal support and strategic advice for EPD, including drafting of commercial agreements, with a particular focus on licensing, acquisition, and supply chain activities.

The Role:

  • Global responsibility for strategically important licensing, acquisition, and supply chain initiatives for EPD, including interfacing with global stakeholders and negotiating and drafting product licensing and acquisition agreements.

  • Develops the strategy for and negotiates a wide range of other commercial agreements, including complex matters relating to procurement, sales, marketing, and research collaborations.

  • Advises legal department management of critical project developments and issues.

  • May initiate or lead cross-functional or cross-divisional projects.

  • Develops and provides training to business and legal department colleagues. This includes the creation of new agreement templates, playbooks and training to support efficient contracting processes.

  • Fosters strong working relationships with internal clients and provides sound and practical advice.

  • Identifies and prioritizes strategic matters with the highest impact.

  • Good Judgment: Understands how assigned responsibilities support Abbott’s business objectives, and able to provide practical, risk-balanced advice based on an understanding of the scope of an issue, taking advantage of internal networks and external intelligence.

  • Collaboration: Understands the available legal and business resources and an ability to integrate information from a number of sources to achieve business results in a complex, global, matrixed environment.

  • Anticipation: Stays up to date on changes in law, enforcement, and business objectives and adapts approach as necessary to manage risk and mitigate issues before they arise.

  • Influencing: Builds strong relationships with global colleagues and business partners to tactfully influence and gain support to drive desired outcomes. Represents Abbott externally to customers, suppliers, and competitors.

Education and Background:

  • Law degree and 5-7 years of relevant legal experience in a comparable position ( e . g ., within the pharmaceutical industry or working for a law firm consulting pharmaceutical and life sciences companies)

  • In-depth knowledge of licensing, acquisitions, alliance management, supply, manufacturing, and pharmaceutical research and development.

  • Transactional experience with significant client contact and responsibility.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and articulate recommendations and options clearly and concisely to a variety of business partners.

  • Ability to draft clear and effective contractual documents and manage a large volume and variety of agreements, from simple amendments to complex agreements.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team on complex projects.

  • Ability to interface with outside counsel, vendors, and colleagues of all levels across a range of functions and with different cultural backgrounds.
