Processing scale-up & deployment across multiple brands & products platforms

This position reports into R&D Manager Process Deployment and is based in Thailand. You will be part of an Asia-wide R&D organization responsible for taking innovations from concept to launch, serving millions of consumers across multiple markets

What will you do

The R&D Senior Scientist Process Deployment is responsible for the scale-up & implementation of manufacturing processes across a range of personal care liquids. From Skin Creams to Lotions, from Shampoo’s to Cleansers, you will have the opportunity to showcase your capability across a wide portfolio of well known brands including Aveeno®, Neutrogena®, OGX®, Clean & Clear®, Johnsons Baby®

Your primary responsibility is to deploy product innovation into the hands of our consumers – taking a formulation designed at our R&D Hub in Singapore and determining the best way to assemble those ingredients into a product that consumers love. Delivering quality safe & efficacious products with exceptional consumer experience whilst ensuring a perfect fit to our manufacturing lines – and all at the right cost & efficiency.

You will need to be a strong “integrator” – combining requirements on product performance & quality, together with a strong Design for Manufacturing mindset. This will mean you working with Formulators, Analytical Teams, Quality, Supply Chain and factory teams, so you need to be a strong communicator and ensure our innovations deliver On-Time-in-Full.

We believe Process Deployment is a critical enabling capability to ensure we execute with excellence, so we are also looking for an individual that is curious, inquisitive and constantly looking for opportunities where processing can drive efficiencies in the business; this could be new sustainable ways to manufacturing our products, improving operational efficiency for innovations in deployment – all while ensuring we meet quality and consumer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

• Responsible for scale-up and deployment of process designs for key global and regional brands such as Aveeno®, Neutrogena®, OGX®, Clean & Clear® & Johnsons Baby®

• To maintain a safe and healthy work environment that complies with the company’s policies. - Working safely in our pilot plant, handling materials and operating equipment

• Planning, executing and reporting factory trials – taking your process design and ensuring excellent fit to our manufacturing lines.

• Understanding impact of process on product performance (e.g. stability) and experience (e.g. sensory) and being able to adjust process design to meet quality criteria

• Root Cause Analysis to address problems that may occur at any stage of the development process, from lab scale, through pilot plant and to production scale.

• Design for Manufacturing – engaging early with formulation and supply chain teams to identify and highlight potential risks/concerns and ensure action plans in place to fully mitigate.

• Good understanding of how processing impacts product characteristics (rheology, particle size etc)

• Understand how to scale-up from lab to pilot to factory – using methodology on mixing times, energy, residence time and fluid flow to develop relationship data-models and correlations.

• Working as part of a multi-functional team as well as being able to manage your own workplan and run experimental programmes independently.

• To accurately record experimental finding and observations, maintaining high standards of data quality and record keeping across internal systems.

What we are looking for

Required Qualifications

• Experience working in consumer goods sector – personal care, homecare or foods; pharmaceuticals also considered.

• Proven experience operating in pilot plant and factory environments, or within a laboratory with a passion to development yourself.

• Being able to build strong interdependent partnerships internally in R&D and to broader cross-functional teams in Quality, Supply Chain and Factory Operations

• As the role requires working with teams across Asia, you will need to have strong English skills

• Able to travel overseas to lead and support factory trials

Desired Qualifications

• A minimum of a Bachelor's or Master's degree with >2 years of proven experience is required, Chemistry / Chemical Engineering degrees preferred

• Additional experience across formulation, processing, claims, packaging & consumer science also welcomed.
