We build innovative tools for our newsrooms and ensure the ethical and effective use of data. Our data domains and functions have grown significantly over the last few years and we are implementing a new data strategy to take us to the next level in our use of data to drive business value. We need a dedicated individual therefore to evolve the vision for consistent, industry standard data engineering systems, tools & practices and to lead a team ensuring we develop and maintain those practices effectively. Our team works with a modern cloud stack, including GCP, cloud-based tools and frameworks for data engineering. Your role: We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Data Engineering Manager to lead and oversee our data engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing and mentoring a team of data engineers, ensuring they have clear direction and support while fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. Your key responsibilities will include guiding the team through data-related projects, implementing best practices, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable data solutions. The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of data engineering processes, tools, and methodologies, combined with excellent leadership abilities. You will play a critical role in project planning, resource allocation, and continuous improvement, ensuring the team remains focused, efficient, and aligned with organisational goals. Day-to-Day Responsibilities: ● Foster strong collaboration with parallel teams such as product, analytics, architects and business units, ensuring they are aware of the capabilities, ongoing projects, and successes of the data engineering team. ● Serve as the main point of contact to translate technical accomplishments into business value for non-technical audiences, ensuring they understand the impact of the team's work. ● Work closely with non-technical teams to gather feedback and adjust data engineering projects to better align with business needs. ● Proactively advocate for the adoption of data engineering solutions by demonstrating how they can improve business processes or solve complex problems for other teams. ● Collaborate with senior leadership to ensure the work of the data engineering team is aligned with the company’s strategic goals and clearly communicated to stakeholders. ● Act as the first point of contact for data-related issues with external providers, coordinating timely troubleshooting and ensuring that issues are resolved within agreed timelines to minimise disruption to business operations. ● Create presentations, reports, and demos to showcase the team's impact on the business and highlight how data-driven solutions are adding value. ● Provide regular reports on the status of data delivery performance, highlighting any incidents and actions taken to prevent future occurrences. ● Support continuous learning and professional development by providing opportunities for training, conferences, and upskilling. Encourage team members to stay updated on the latest industry trends and technologies. ● Encourage problem-solving and innovative thinking within the team by focusing on solutions rather than problems. Create a space where team members can experiment and learn ● Acknowledge the hard work and accomplishments of team members, whether big or small. Celebrate successes and contributions, reinforcing a positive team culture and boosting morale. What We’re Looking For: ● Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field. ● 10+ years of experience in data engineering or a related field, with a minimum of 3 years in a leadership or management role. ● Knowledge of ETL/ELT processes and data pipeline automation tools (e.g., Airflow, dbt, Dataform). ● Understanding of data modelling, warehousing concepts, and experience with BI tools (e.g., Looker, Power BI, Tableau). ● Familiarity with data governance frameworks and experience with regulatory compliance such as GDPR.
