Johns Hopkins University Veterinary Technician in Baltimore, Maryland

Research Animal Resources is seeking a Veterinary Technician to support laboratory operations.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical Rodent Care

  • Reporting to the rodent veterinarian, this position is the first responder to clinical calls. Also responds to calls received by the vet directly, when appropriate.

  • Evaluate clinical cases, including gathering signalment.

  • Handle cases, as appropriate, using sound veterinary judgment and cognizant of the labs IACUC-approved protocol and research needs.

  • Communicate to researchers and veterinarians' clinical findings and case management recommendations.

  • Perform treatments, as directed by the veterinarian.

  • For routine cases, follow standard treatment plans.

  • For non-routine cases, refer to the veterinarians for management.

  • Follow up cases and treatment plans, ensuring researcher compliance to clinical intervention and case resolution.

  • Give progress reports to veterinarian.

  • Maintain electronic record of all active/treatment cases, and close clinical cases when resolved appropriately.

  • Provides health history and coordinates submission of animals to pathology as requested, with approval by the veterinarian.

  • Notify lab of husbandry concerns resulting to clinical harm, provide guidance to resolve, and communicate issues to the veterinarian if it is chronic issue.

Rodent Support Programs

  • Teach rodent anesthesia techniques, and correct use of the rodent gas anesthesia machines.

  • Verify protocol for use of anesthesia machines.

  • Certify users on policy/procedures of RAR machine use, and archival of certification history.

  • Coordinate reservations, and maintain machine calendar, for all approved users.

  • Provide rodent anesthesia services to research staff, if requested

  • Gather, and provide necessary budget info to appropriate admin for billing.

  • Maintain and resupply equipment for the rodent anesthesia machine.

Rodent Support Programs Secondary Responsibility (as required for cross-coverage)

  • Perform rodent rederivation by caesarian section and neonatal transfer.

  • Teach and perform rodent techniques as requested by the veterinarian, including restraint, IM, IV, IP and SQ injections, blood and tissue collection, rodent surgery techniques, nail and incisor trim.

  • Collect samples including but not limited to blood and tissues.

  • Provide research support such as colony management.

  • Perform diagnostic lab techniques (in-house parasitology, basic microscopy, etc.)

  • Other duties as requested by the veterinarian.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.

  • One year of related experience.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Attention to detail; conscientious; strong written (email) and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently.

  • Excellent record keeping skills and proficiency with use of computer programs, including spreadsheets and databases.

  • Must be a team player and able to cross train with other veterinary technicians for cross-coverage, as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting in a seated position for extended periods of time.

  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

  • Finger and hand dexterity required to restraint animals and manipulate things.

  • Significant standing, walking

  • Ability to lift up to 10 lbs.

  • Ability to operate a computer on a frequent basis.

  • Ability to wear appropriate personnel protective equipment (PPE) as assigned for the animal housing room.

  • Must not have allergies to rodents like mice and rats.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science or Biology.

  • College Degree, and experience in animal care preferred (extra preference to those with lab animal experience).

Starting Salary Range: $15.50 - $26.00 HRLY (43,160 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
