Johns Hopkins University Veterinary Surgery Technician in Baltimore, Maryland

Research Animal Resources is seeking a Veterinary Surgery Technician .

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Surgical Responsibilities:

  • Prepare animals for surgery by pre-anesthetic administration, IV placement, intubation, clipping and scrubbing animals, anesthetic administration and monitoring

  • Act as the operating room nurse and surgical assistant

  • Provide post-operative monitoring and care

  • Set up and break down surgical facilities including cleaning and disinfecting the surgical suite and cleaning, packing and autoclaving instruments

  • Prevent and handle anesthetic emergencies and perform CPR

  • Endotracheal intubation of difficult species including marmosets, macaques, rabbits and pigs

  • Maintain all clinical and surgical equipment including x-ray and anesthesia machines, ECG, cautery, autoclaves, etc.

  • Operate special equipment including mechanical ventilators, invasive blood pressure monitoring, xray machine, and syringe pumps for CRI administration

Research:

  • Assist investigators in various research protocols, including maintaining large animal species under anesthesia while performing MRIs, PET scans, and other research studies.

Clinical Care & Health Maintenance:

  • Administer medications for treatment via multiple routes including oral and parenteral.

  • Obtain diagnostic samples from all species including but not limited to blood, urine, and feces.

  • Perform health maintenance for dogs, cats, pigs and rabbits, including but not limited to hoof and nail trims and collecting routine weights.

Teaching:

  • Teach investigators, fellows and technical staff to perform various technical procedures.

  • Train personnel in routine clinical care, daily maintenance of animals under medical treatment, maintenance and monitoring animals during all phases of anesthesia, including proper dosage and proper route of anesthesia for a variety of species.

Inventory Control:

  • Stock pharmacy with veterinary supplies and drugs.

  • Keep controlled substance log.

  • Order supplies and equipment for surgery and animal health care.

Quarantine:

  • Perform pre-release examination on all non-human primates in quarantine including final chest xray, body weight check, general physical, TB testing and blood work.

  • Supervise movement of anesthetized animals to housing area

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for the surgical suite.

  • Maintain animal records (paper and electronic).

  • Schedule surgery and technical service procedures.

  • Prepare bills for services provided.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in veterinary technology and some related experience required

  • Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree preferred

  • Certified Veterinary Technician strongly preferred

Role/Level/Range: ACRO40/E/02/CD

Starting Salary Range: $17.00 - $30.00 HRLY (49,400 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
