Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland

The Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Technologist for the Cutaneous Nerve Laboratory. The Cutaneous Nerve Laboratory is a dynamic 15-member lab that works collaboratively to study nerve fibers in the skin. We deal with clinical samples, clinical research projects, animal model-based research and serve as a core laboratory for world-wide clinical trials.

Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor the Research Technologist is responsible for performing routine analyses and tests on human skin tissue. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, standard operating procedures and techniques gained through training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • As a primary responsibility, process skin biopsy samples that are part of clinical and research protocols.

  • Utilize techniques include immunohistochemistry, Congo red staining, and quantification of structures using stereology.

  • Work with the PI and lab manager to meet regular clinical deadlines for which the lab is responsible

  • Follow established procedures or protocols that utilize aseptic technique to perform experiments.

  • Operate basic laboratory equipment such as light microscope, glassware, centrifuge, pH meter, digital scales, analytical balance, and utilize flow hood.

  • Operate lab computers for data entry.

  • May utilize in vivo models in experiments.

  • Prepare tissue for study utilizing immunohistochemical techniques.

  • Maintain accurate data records.

  • Maintain and make minor adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment.

  • Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.

  • Monitor inventory levels.

Additional tasks include

  • Disseminate lab reports for Hopkins and outside cases.

  • Perform external and internal billing.

  • Assist with TTR staining, cryoprotect biopsies & specimen preparation, cutting and Congo red mounting.

  • Assist Clinical Nurse Manager in Biopsy Clinic.

  • Enter outside clinical specimens into database.

  • Assist and act as backup on slide entry and sorting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred

  • Laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)

Schedule: M-F 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
